The Series

Adventure-time-S1-BD_01

This hit animated series for Cartoon Network, Adventure Time, was created by Pendleton Ward and has been nominated for three Primetime Emmys. An off the wall mixture of fantasy, sci-fi, adult and adolescent humor, the series follows Finn the human boy (Jeremy Shada) and his best friend, talking dog Jake (John DiMaggio), in a strange land named Ooo. Mainly, the focus in on their interaction with Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch), who Finn has a secret crush on, and the misunderstood, but nevertheless nefarious Ice King (Tom Kenny) who is always cooking up various schemes to kidnap the princess. Finn’s unending urge for adventure leads the two into various and sundry odd circumstances bringing the pair up against strange  creatures, including candy zombies, and dead businessmen.

The mixture of the zany, puerile, and cynical doesn’t always quite work, but Adventure Time is truly unique and groundbreaking, both in its visual and its thematic style. Ward and crew have effectively melded together all the classic characters and archetypes of fantasy and role playing games in this visually stunning and humorous series, made up of twenty-six mini-episodes, roughly averaging eleven minutes a piece. It’s worth the praise it has garnered and the rabid fan base that it keeps accumulating.

The image for Adventure Time, offered up in a scrumptious 1080p/24 VC-1 encodement from Cartoon Network, is richly saturated, crisp, and has strong contrast. There’s no sign of digital noise or aliasing, and nothing really to complain about in this transfer, apart from the inherent roughness in the line art itself that shows up from time to time.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3/5]

The audio is supplied only in a lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo mix. It’s fine for this material, but it can sound just a tinge boxy and a little harsh in the upper frequencies.

Apart from the four audio commentaries, this one is filled with a bunch of off the wall behind the scenes featurettes with the crew that are filled with physical gags and generally surreal goings on. There is one extra mini-mini-episode of Adventure Time as well, “The Wand”.
