Assassination Classroom: Season Two Part Two (TheaterByte Blu-ray Review)

Assassination Classroom: Season Two, Part Two Blu-ray Combo Pack Cover ArtIn what is ostensibly the final part of this funny and often heartfelt, action-filled comedy sci-fi anime series, Assassination Classroom closes out in the bottom half of season two with episodes 14-25 as the class finds out the truth behind their oddball alien teacher Koro Sensei as the destruction of the planet draws near. The class splits between those students who begin to question whether they still really want to assassinate the teacher they have come to love and those who remain dedicated to their original assignment.

As with the previous season and the first half of Season Two, Assassination Classroom Season Two, Part Two maintains a fine balance of offbeat comedy, dazzling sci-fi comedy, and heartfelt coming of age drama centered around the quirky, demented, and surprisingly caring Koro Sensei and his students. The culmination, without providing any spoilers, is a closing battle sequence that harnesses the entire animation prowess that has defined the series. The weakness of the second half of Season Two is the final roundup episode that feels anti-climactic and totally unnecessary.

The Video

Just as with Season Two, Part One, Assassination Classroom: Season Two, Part Two c looks gorgeous on Blu-ray. It arrives with an AVC 1080p encodement framed at 1.78:1 from Funimation and as the same vivid primary colors without oversaturation, excellent contrast that shows deep, inky blacks and nuanced shadows, crisp detail in the line art and very little noise or color banding.

The Audio

As with Part One, Assassination Classroom Season Two, Part Part Two gets both the original Japanese-language track in Dolby TrueHD 2.0 stereo and an English dub from Funimation in Dolby TrueHD 5.1. The quality of the mix remains consistent with how it has been in the previous releases. It doesn’t do much with the surround channels or even add much low end in the LFE. We really only get some added atmospherics. The English cast do an okay job, but I don’t like the way much of the translations often change the meaning slightly from the literal translations in the subs. The Japanese stereo mix seems too loud and devoid of dynamic range, but the cast also don’t sound as canned.

The Supplements

This release doesn’t come with an abundance of extras, but the two audio commentaries are fun and the Top Ten Moments, although a rehash of the series material, is good quick way to go back to some of the better moments, as picked by the producers anyway.

  • Two episode audio commentaries
  • Top Ten Moments: Assassination Classroom Season 2 (HD)
  • Textless Opening and Closing Songs (HD)
  • Previews (HD)
  • Funimation Trailers

The Final Assessment

This series has been a wild ride of jokes, action, sci-fi, and a demented octopus teacher looking to blow up the world – what else could an anime fan ask for? Well, another season of course – please? The Blu-ray Combo Pack is of the highest visual quality even of a little weak in the audio department.
