The Series

[Rating:4/5]

Based on the Japanese light novel series by by Hikaru Sugii, Heaven’s Memo Pad (神様のメモ帳, Kami-sama no Memo-chō) is a 12-episode anime adaptation that follows high schooler Narumi Fujishima whose isolated life becomes filled with adventure when he meets the sole member of his school’s Gardening Club, Ayaka, and she introduces him to Alice, the reclusive NEET hacker and detective who lives above the local ramen shop. Suddenly, Narumi finds himself involved in an adventurous world of mystery, yakuza, gang wars, teen romance, and underground prostitution.

The series is brief, but cycles through a few story arcs that tie the entire thing together culminating in a surprise ending that sets the series up nicely for a second season. The cast of characters develop nicely over the course of the twelve episodes and while character design and overall animation is nothing groundbreaking, it is strong and detailed nonetheless.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The animation on this Blu-ray is generally of a high quality with little artifacts to complain about and vibrant colors. With that said, there is a bit of softness to the overall appearance that keeps it from gaining a perfect mark.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The original Japanese language track and an English dub are provided in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (48kHz/224-bit). It offers clean dialogue and a good amount of dynamic range with clear stereo separation.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1/5]

Only clean opening and closing animations plus additional Sentai Filmworks trailers are supplied.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

I thoroughly enjoyed Heaven’s Memo Pad and the way it mixes mystery, crime solving, and high school drama with comedy and hints of teen romance. The animation is well done and the Blu-ray from Sentai is a solid release.
