The Film

[Rating:4.5/5]

An all-star cast doing the voices and epic comic book action make Megamind a wickedly fun experience. The latest animated adventure from DreamWorks to hit Blu-ray features Will Ferrell (Megamind), Brad Pitt (Metro Man), Tina Fey (Roxanne Ritchie) and Jonah Hill (Hal/Tighten), and David Cross (Minion) as the lead characters in an adventure that turns the classic hero vs. villain story on its tail.

Starting out as a comic twist on the Superman mythology, Megamind and his super good nemesis Metro Man are sent to Earth by their parents in tiny spaceships in order to survive the destruction of their planets. Metro Man is found and adopted by a loving couple, whilst Megamind and his Minion land in prison, adopted by the inmates.

Eventually, when the two grow up, they become the yin and yang of Metro City, doing constant battle against each other, with Megamind and Minion, as every good villain should, always coming out on the losing end. But, eventually Megamind’s evil genius wins the day, when he kidnaps the TV news reporter Roxanne Ritchi for the last time and manages to destroy his lifelong nemesis Metro Man as he tries to rescue the spunky reporter.

With Metro City or “Metrocity,” as he calls it, finally in his total control, Megamind finds that he is bored with no one to try and stop his evil plans. So, he invents his own superhero infused with Metro Man’s powers to do battle with him, but Tighten, it turns out, wants to do bad, especially after he is rejected by Roxanne Ritchi. Megamind, with his own growing affection for Roxanne, has been slowly turning good, and it comes to the point where he decides he doesn’t want to be the villain anymore and becomes the defender of Metro City – and Roxanne.

It is a marvelously animated and energetic twist on comic book lore, with several comic allusions to the Superman legend, such as Megamind’s disguise as a curiously Marlon Brando-like Jor El-type character, acting as Tighten’s father.

Video Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

The Megamind AVC/MPEG-4 encodement is a strong one, as strong as one would expect a digitally sourced transfer of a CGI-animated film to look. The textures and details in the characters are easily distinguished, like the individual furs on Minion’s robotic gorilla body. Colors are bright and vivid and the picture shows no video noise. One minor defect on the transfer is some very slight aliasing that pops up from time to time; it’s not necessarily a byproduct of the encodement, but it is still enough to warrant a slight markdown in an otherwise flawless image.

Audio Quality

[Rating:5/5]

Megamind shows up on Blu-ray with a brilliant Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless mix. It has thunderous low frequencies, smooth highs, and perfectly balanced dialogue. The mix is a rather aggressive one that completely engulfs the listener. The back channels are fully utilized for atmospherics and discrete sounds, and the front imaging is wide with lots of motion to follow the action on screen.
