The Film

[Rating:4/5]

Puss in Boots tells the story of Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) as he is tasked with recovering a princess’ stolen ruby. Facing off against three different foes, Puss must embrace his destiny and, once again, prove why he is the stuff true legends are made of. Featuring the voice talents of Banderas, Salma Hayek (Kitty Softpaws), Zach Galifianakis (Humpty Dumpty), Amy Sedaris (Jill) and Billy Bob Thornton (Jack), Puss in Boots is something the Shrek films (minus Forever After) just wasn’t, that being funny, charming and a pure joy to watch.

Having never really been that enamored with really any of the Shrek films (well, minus Forever After), I went into Puss in Boots with no real hope. The Shrek films, while visually delightful, seemed to lack any real substance. There was no charm, no joy in the films (something a majority of Pixar creations have a lot of). The end result? Puss in Boots is easily the strongest title in this Shrek series. Possibly because it features a cat as its main character, Boots was just a whole bunch of fun to watch. The humor was there, the jokes on point, the characters enjoyable, and the action was spot on. Really, I’ll just say if you ever felt let down by any of the previous entries, be sure to check out Boots. You just may be surprised at how good it truly is.

Video Quality

2D HD: [Rating:5/5]

3D Effect: [Rating:4.5/5]

The film’s 2:35:1, AVC/MPEG-4 (2D) and MVC (3D) encoded, transfer is quite strong in either dimension. Benefiting from being an animated film, Puss in Boots features rich, vibrant colors that are constantly full of detail. Whether the darker, low-lit moments or the bright, outdoor shots, detail is excellent throughout. One of my favorite aspects of transfers like these is to simply pick a random moment and pause the film, scan around the screen and notice all the seemingly infinite, intricate details the animators put into the title. Blacks are deep, dark and inky giving us a very lush image. Fine textures of Puss in Boots hats, little blades of grass and the bright sun are prime examples of just how impressive this transfer is. Literally I could go on and on raving about this presentation, but I’ll just sum this up with one word — stunning.

While the 2D transfer is excellent, Puss in Boots’ 3D counterpart is equally as impressive. In particular, I was wowed by the sheer amount of depth to this 3D transfer. Granted, this is an animated title so audiences will surely be pleased with what DreamWorks has put together. Most notable is how well the characters seemed to be placed and positioned. There are  a few gimmicky moments here and there like coins flying at us, or the wide swooping camera movements; however, I didn’t really seem to find this at all. All in all, outside of Toy Story 3, this is the one of the best 3D offerings currently available.

Audio Quality

[Rating:5/5]

Just like the video transfer, the provided English 7.1 Dolby TrueHD is great. Dialogue is well reproduced throughout via the center channel. Little discrete effects like the clanging of swords of the booming horses hitting the ground, fill the room. Atmosphere is excellent as well. The film’s score by Henry Jackman helps to add to this atmosphere giving us a very heroic, up beat score. Pans between rears during the heightened action moments are invisible creating a truly fine aural experience. Audiences will no doubt will as pleased with the audio as they were with the visuals.
