The Film

[Rating:3/5]

Disney Channel star Ashley Tisdale is back reprising her High School Musical role as Sharpay Evans in this made-for-television movie Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure. Anyone with tweens or early teens might know who or what a “Sharpay” is, but for those without kids, a quick description of Sharpay would be a combination of Elle from Legally Blonde and Hannah Montana.

In this latest adventure, the spoilt rich teen in hot pink is asked to go to New York for a Broadway audition. For some reason, even though she’s no longer a minor and already a year out of high school, she needs to convince her dad that she’s responsible enough to move to the big city and live on her own.

When she gets there, first Sharpay is kicked out of her luxurious penthouse apartment because they don’t allow pets and she has to move into a rundown studio apartment near NYU recommended by her mom’s friend’s son Peyton (Austin Butler). She also finds that they didn’t want her to audition, but instead, they wanted her dog, Boi. Down, but not out, Sharpay enters Boi into the auditions where he is pitted against another dog named Countess and her owner, a young bratty kid with more stage experience. The competition is on, with Countess’ owner pulling all the underhanded tricks he can to try to ensure victory. Meanwhile, it’s nothing but puppy love for Boi and Countess and maybe a little romance for Sharpay and Peyton as well.

There’s not much to the story, but it’s mild mannered, sugary fun that young girls will eat up for sure. It offers a few musical performances that are big productions and mostly forgettable pop fare that parents won’t have to worry about their kids listening to.

Video Quality

Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure is clean and detailed with vibrant colors, natural flesh tones and good shadow details. There isn’t any noise ore compression artifacts to speak of in its AVC/MPEG-4 1080p transfer.

Audio Quality

The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack makes good use of the surround channels for atmospheric sounds while presenting clean dialogue in the center channel. The musical performances provide a big soundstage with a wide stereo spread, deep musical low frequencies and a solid midrange.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure sticks pretty much to the Disney Channel formula of musicals for tweens and early teens. You find anything too controversial or risqué in this film, the atmosphere is light, as is the plot. Parents can safely purchase this for their young ones without worrying about anything here being a bad influence. There isn’t even the hint of a crude remark or joke that – wink, wink – only the grownups will understand.
