Sony Announces Two New Blu-ray Players: BDP-S360 and BDP-S560

Sony today announced it is adding two new stand-alone Blu-ray Disc players to its line-up, including a player with built-in Wi-Fi capability for easy BD-Live access.

The BDP-S360 and BDP-S560 stand-alone players deliver Full HD 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema™ output, decode all the latest advanced audio codecs and are BD-Live capable with your broadband internet connection and purchase of external memory.

Chris Fawcett, vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics’ Home Product Division, says, “”The demands of today’s home theater go beyond pristine picture quality and our new Blu-ray Disc product line offers a breadth of technologies that deliver an amazing entertainment experience. Consumers don’t want a living room cluttered with wires and the new Blu-ray Disc product lineup breaks down the wired barriers of the past.”

The BDP-S560 easily connects to the Internet through  existing wireless home networks with its built-in Wi-Fi wireless networking capabilities (802.11N/G/B/A), to download and stream BD-Live content including additional scenes, short subjects, trailers, interactive games, and more. The wireless connection can also be used to download firmware updates to keep the player up-to-date.

The BDP-S560 also supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup for easy connection to enabled wireless routers.  The player is also Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) ready, allowing it to connect to other DLNA compliant devices to share digital photos. Both models sport external USB ports for local storage so users can add their USB flash storage device, which is required for BD-Live support. The BDP-S560 utilizes a front USB port for viewing photos from your USB flash memory device or directly from a digital camera.

Both the BDP-S360 and BDP-S560 models support 7.1 decoding of Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution as well as bitstreaming of the advanced codecs via the players’ HDMI output.  On the video end, each  player supports Deep Color video output and AVCHD discs encoded with x.v.Color (xvYCC). They also feature compatbility with all the typical  video formats, including BD-R/RE (BDMV and BDAV modes), DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, CD, CD-R/RW (CD-DA format) and JPEG on BD/DVD/CD recordable media.

The players also feature what Sony calls Precision Drive™ technology, which  helps to detect and correct wobbling discs from three directions, supporting more stable playback of bent or scratched Blu-ray Discs and DVDs.

The players are scheduled to ship this summer at SRPs of US$300 (BDP-S360) and US$350(BDP-S560) respectively.
