I just don’t get the continued success in this horror franchise, but nevertheless it has a following that allows it to take in over $200 million for the third film in its franchise. For me, after the first film, there was nothing really left to see, although the second film was surprisingly enjoyable, though quite predictable.
Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel that takes fans of the franchise back to the beginning of the story a prequel if you will, that shows how the curse of the malevolent entity that has been harassing this family throughout the films all began, starting with the young Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) and Katie (Chloe Csengery).
Anyone who has seen the first two films will be familiar with the format, for it remains constant here. A family videotapes their home as strange occurrences, which turn out to be a violent spirit, harass them. It’s a mostly silent, quiet film where one must watch rather intensely to spot all the odd occurrences.

Paranormal Activity is meant to look like it was shot on videotape, so there is nothing in this AVC/MPEG-4 1080p transfer that looks outstanding in high definition. It is presented pretty much as is and the encodement stays out of the way, but i ist not a reference release by a mile.

Aside from the occasional rumble during the jump scenes, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix for Paranormal Activity 3 is relatively tame, without much activity in the surround channels and dialogue that is intelligible, but not very natural sounding.

There is nothing really original about this new installment in the Paranormal Activity franchise and somehow it continues to fascinate people. I personally do not find it to be very terrifying or very interesting on any level and think it’s time for this particular series to be put to rest.
