SUMMARY

A group of three male friends in high school desperately try to lose their virginity, but complications occur when love, romance, and other issues arise.

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

The Last American Virgin is one of many 1980s teen sex comedies following in the wake of 1981’s Porky’s, following most of the basic themes set out by that film. Written and directed by Boaz Davidson and a remake of his Israeli film Lemon Popsicle, Virgin distinguishes itself by being on the one hand a paint-by-numbers teen comedy with a group of horny male high school friends looking to get laid at all costs, providing the requisite ratio of female nudity, creepy peeping Tom shower scenes, and a d*ck measuring contest. On the other hand, Boaz infuses the film with a thoughtful coming-of-age story, an angsty unrequited love subplot, and a dark twist concerning teen sex and abortion.

Not many teen sex comedies of that era or beyond were willing to go where Boaz went. For example, when Boaz shows us the guys patronizing a local hooker, it doesn’t go the way it normally goes in these sorts of films. It’s awkward, the prostitute is crude and demeaning, and at least one of the boys feels so overwhelmed by shame he vomits.

The Last American Virgin may not be a film for everyone and given its subject and political incorrectness it wouldn’t survive the cancel squads on social media today. The film is one that is worth another look and can stand up well to other films of the genre from the era.

  • Steve Antin, Lawrence Monoson, and Joe Rubbo in The Last American Virgin (1982)
  • Lawrence Monoson and Diane Franklin in The Last American Virgin (1982)
  • Louisa Moritz in The Last American Virgin (1982)
  • Steve Antin, Winifred Freedman, Gerri Idol, Lawrence Monoson, and Tessa Richarde in The Last American Virgin (1982)
  • The Last American Virgin Blu-ray (MVD Rewind)

The Video

MVD presents The Last American Virgin in a 1.85:1 AVC 1080p encodement on Blu-ray Disc. The transfer is generally organic with no obvious issues with edge enhancement or noise. Granularity is a bit course, but details and textures are all there and we see good depth of field. The main issue with the transfer is some obvious source damage that is still apparent such as some scratches, dirt and sparkle. The shadows can also look just a little murky, but ultimately aren’t egregious enough to wipe too much detail from the image.

The Audio

The Last American Virgin is provided with an English LPCM 2.0 stereo sound mix on Blu-ray. The track presents the sizzling ‘80s rock and pop music soundtrack with strong musicality and dynamics, wide stereo imaging, and good clarity. The dialogue has some slightly audible clipping in a few spots but is still intelligible, clean, and listenable.

The Supplements

The interviews with the leads and cinematographer Adam Greenberg are interesting featurettes and wonderful to watch.

The Final Assessment

A politically incorrect 1980s teen sex comedy that stands out from the crowd for its darker subject matter and coming of age subplot, MVD provides this film in a satisfying collector’s edition Blu-ray with “VHS” slipcover on their MVD Rewind imprint.
