The Series

[Rating:3.5/5]

Comedian Chris Lilley is like the male, Australian answer to Tracey Ullman, his comedy routines consist of Lilley playing numerous characters – male, female, black, white, Asian, young old – and he hits every topic no matter how taboo. People may already be familiar with the “mockumentary” style of his series from We Can Be Heroes, and he continues this with his latest, Angry Boys, bringing over some familiar characters as well as some new ones. This HBO series is not for the timid or easily offended, because Lilley turns a mirror on society at large and by doing so shows just how ridiculous we can all be in our prejudices and choices. S.mouse, the black American wrapper, has Lilley made-up in dark makeup and hip-hop clothing, rapping some of the worst raps you;ve ever heard– “Poo on You” anyone? – while his character “Gran” is an older lady working in a juvenile detention facility who likes to separate the boys during recreation time into teams of “light skin” and “dark skin.” Of course, there’s the profoundly ridiculous as well, like former World Surfing Champion Blake Oakfield who lost his testicles from a dolphin bite. Lilley’s humor is sometimes laugh out loud funny, but not every bit works over the course of the entire series. What is most ingenious about his style is how he creates a real sense of documentary by working the stories across multiple episodes for each character and connecting them all together. For instance, Daniel and Nathan Sims, the twin brothers, are connected to S.mouse through their love of the terrible raps of S.mouse and “Gran” also happens to be their grandmother. It adds to the “realism” of the mockumentary style.

Video Quality

[Rating:3/5]

The image for Angry Boys isn’t exactly reference quality, but its not really the fault of HBO or this AVC/MPEG-4 transfer. It arrives in 1080i/60 and much of it looks like consumer grade HD video, rather than a high end cinematographic high definition production, but that is probably the look they are going for. It’s more “documentary” than big production. As a result, detail is never really strong and there is definite noise and artifacting that can be spotted throughout.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Audio is also nothing too special, but it is serviceable in the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack. It comes alive mostly during the S.mouse segments when the hip-hop tunes are pumping ad the low end is bumped up a notch. Dialogue is mostly clear, but there isn’t much activity in the surround channels.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

Chris Lilley returns with another crude, rude, yet spot on look at the inanities of society with his colorful characters in his latest mockumentary series Angry Boys. As high definition entertainment, its middling at best, but as pure comedy, it is definitely worth a look for those not easily offended.
