The Series

[Rating:4/5]

Ah! Beavis and Butt-head finally on Blu-ray, finally back on the air. Originally airing on MTV back in the 90s, Butthead was one of the most risqué shows of its time, like South Park was after it. Lambasting everything and leaving no stone unturned, Butt-head had its loyal base of fans that championed its every episode, its every joke. Akin to Family Guy leaving for a few years, Butt-head gained even more fans over the time period it was taken off the air. It’s due to this increase in interest in the series that Creator Mike Judge decided to bring the bumbling antics of Beavis and Butt-head back, in this initial 12 episode offering.

Mostly mocking other MTV branded television shows including Jersey Shore and Teen Mom, this 12 episode offering packs not only laugh-out-loud humor, but also shows that the series just may be heading in the direction that South Park did. By that I mean initially South Park was mostly gross-out humor (damn funny gross-out humor I’ll add), never really adding much substance to their characters until the latter years. It’s as the series gained respect that Matt and Trey decided to be more topical. That’s how I see Butt-head going, the kind of direction we can see in these 12 episodes (and the other 10+ sure to be featured on a Vol, .5).

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The 1:33:1 framed, AVC/MPEG-4 encoded transfer is quite good. The series color palette features vibrant, rich colors like that of the reds of Beavis’ shorts or the blues of the sky. Clarity and detail is top notch for animation, whether exterior wide shots or tight close ups. Textures of the clothing or the other varying objects are solid. There is a loss of detail during some of the flashback moments, but this just goes to show how far the series has come (similar to that of The Simpsons). All in all, these are transfers that fans of the series will certainly love.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The series’ provided DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is equally as good as the aforementioned video. Dialogue is well reproduced throughout via the center channel. Atmosphere offers up your various musical cues or background effects like that of students chatting in the first episode. LFE is solid as well giving us a few instances of deep, immersive bass. Not the kind of bass like the top action films, but still impressive nonetheless. Discrete effects are some of the best aspects of the DTS-HD track. Little attention to detail is shown during each and every episode. All in all, this is a solid effort from Paramount.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1.5/5]

The included supplements are presented in HD.

  • 2011 San Diego Comic-Con Panel – This runs 19:17 and is a panel from Comic Con with discussion on the show’s background with Johnny Knoxville and Mike Judge
  • Beavis & Butt-Head Interruptions – A few brief telephone conversations with the Jersey Shore are shown. Gym, Tan, Butt-Head (1:06), Settle Down Snooki (0:59), Beavis and Juice-Head (0:52), and Vinny Reloaded (2:00).
  • Silence Your Cell Phone – Running a brief 0:17, this is a spot where the two encourage you to shut off your phone during the movie.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

Fans will rejoice to know that not only is Beavis and Butt-head finally available on Blu-ray, but also that Paramount has put together these initial 12 episodes with a fine technical presentation. Well Recommended.
