The Film

[Rating:2/5]

Cougars, Inc. is a comedy cashing in on the latest media fascination exploiting the supposed trend of older women looking to let loose sexually with younger men. Sadly, this comedy misses the comedic mark completely with hardly any truly funny moments, and it is far from the naughty, sexy romp that it wants to be. Even James Belushi can’t rescue this one from the comedic doldrums and not even the gorgeous “cougar” ladies like Denise Richards (TV’s Blue Mountain State), Kathryn Morris (TV’s Cold Case), and Rebecca Mader (TV’s No Ordinary Family; TV’s Lost) are enough to spice this up enough.

Sam (Kyle Gallner; A Nightmare on Elm St.; Jennifer’s Body) has been thrown out of just about every prep school in the country and now he’s come to the end of the line. He finally finds a boarding school where the headmaster (James Belushi; TV’s The Defender) is willing to give him a fair shake, seeing that he is actually a talented writer, usually gets high grades, and has been somewhat a victim of circumstances beyond his control. But now his former Playmate mom can no longer afford to pay his pricey tuition of $20,000 a semester. When Sam hooks up with a sexy older lady at a bar after being stood up by the girl of his dreams (Sarah Hyland; TV’s Modern Family) and she leaves him a check for $500 the next morning to help him out, he and his schoolmates devise a plan – they’re going to start an escort service for older women, getting in on the untapped market, helping Sam pay his tuition.

A promising premise, but we’ve seen better from this sort of older woman/younger man scenario back in the eighties with Tom Cruise in Risky Business. Cougars, Inc. is a bore. It tries to be hip, but ends up being no more than an also ran.

Video Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Cougars looks clean with good detail, strong midtones and extended shadow delineation, but it also shows some color banding in places.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Audio is a simple DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that has underused surround channels and slightly muffled sounding dialogue, even though it is intelligible.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:2/5]

The release is a bit short on extras, the only supplement of any true value being the audio commentary.

The supplements provided with this release are:

  • Commentary with writer/director K. Asher Levins and actors Kyler Gallner and Kathryn Morris
  • Deleted Scene (2.35:1; 1080p/24)
  • Cougar 101 (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 0:03.01)
  • Cougars, Inc. Trailer (1.33:1; 480i/60)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

If Cougars, Inc. has one strength its that it never devolves into puerility, but other than that, there are far funnier, sexier, and hipper comedies out there dealing with the same themes. Skip it.
