The Film

[Rating:2/5]

The Farrelly’s (There’s Something About Mary) bring their usual style of raunchiness to this comedy about two couples who develop a hitch in their domestic bliss. When two best friends Rick and Fred (Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) get caught checking out other women, their wives get fed up. It’s not that they don’t love their wives, but, you know, it’s just guy thing. Tired of feeling like second best, their wives (Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate) give the guys a “hall pass,” that is to say, a week away from marriage.

It seems like the greatest thing in the world – a free pass to pick up any lady they want, no questions asked – but the two buddies get off to a slow start when they realize that their years of living the suburban dream has left them without game. I mean, the first thing they do is gather the boys and head for Applebees. It seems expectations don’t quite match reality – and what are their wives up to? They’re free from the marriage too, aren’t they?

Hall Pass has a few genuine laughs here and there and is surprisingly favorable towards the traditional ideals of family, given the Farrelly’s track record. Mostly, however, the film falls flat, trying too hard to be funny and outrageous, where it should have been more restrained and thoughtful. This isn’t a film about teenagers after all.

This release contains both Theatrical and Extended cuts of the film, if you prefer even more pandering in your comedies.

Video Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Hall Pass looks sunny and vibrant with primary colors that absolutely pop, deep blacks and lots of clean, detailed imagery. If it weren’t for a few scenes here and there where the image softens a little and becomes a bit grainier, it might have garnered a perfect score for its AVC/MPEG-4 1080p transfer.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is typical of comedy in that it really uses the surrounds only for ambience, but there’s lots of it to be heard and the stereo spacing across the front is quite spacious as well. Dynamics are good, dialogue is clean, high frequencies are smooth, and the bass even kicks in every once in a while for a rather enjoyable experience.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1.5/5]

This is a combo pack with DVD and Digital Copy for Mac/PC included as well as both Theatrical and Extended cuts of the film, but other than that, there is only one deleted scene and a brief gag reel that isn’t any more amusing than the lame film itself.

The supplements provided with this release are:

  • Deleted Scene (2.40:1; 1080p/24; 0:04.27)
  • Gag Reel (2.40:1; 1080p/24; 0:01.59)
  • BD-Live
  • DVD
  • Digital Copy

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

Skip it. Hall Pass is a lame attempt at shock comedy for the older crowd that does nothing but fall flat.
