Blindspot: The Complete Second Season (TheaterByte Blu-ray Review)

Blindspot: The Complete Second Season Blu-ray Cover ArtWith Season Two of Blindspot, this FBI action thriller picks up after the revelatory events of the season finale that exposed part of the truth behind Jane’s (Jaime Alexander, Thor films, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) identity. She is not the woman we and agent Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton, Strike Back, 300: Rise of an Empire) thought she was. The conspiracy into Jane’s past widens in a second season that brings in a new character to the show, Nas Kamal (Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife), who joins as part of a secretive government agency called Zero Division that is tracking the FBI and Jane’s case. Weller and Jane also begin to get closer to Jane’s past as they uncover a group called Sandstorm looking to overthrow the government through terrorist attacks and infiltration of government institutions. Their leader Shepherd (Michelle Hurd) has connections to Jane and Kurt. Jane also encounters her brother Roman (Luke Mitchell) at Sandstorm and brings him in to the FBI after his memory is wiped just as hers was, but can Roman be used as an asset like Jane or is he beyond help?

Blindspot is pure guilty pleasure television. The first season of this series set up an interesting premise that seemed like it would be impossible to carry on past its first season. Jane Doe, a woman with tattoos all over body that carry coded secrets for the FBI to follow shows up in New York City’s Times Square with no memories of what happened to her. The only way forward from there is to expand the world of the series, which is what the writers tried to do with a conspiracy tied to not only Jane’s past, but Kurt’s as well. The feasibility of the story they tell sometimes stretches one’s ability to suspend disbelief, but various side stories keep this popcorn action series interesting. This season adds in a subplot with one of the team members struggling with suppressed memories of child abuse and the subsequent spiral into substance abuse that causes. Another side story involves a mole from Sandstorm at the FBI and of course the usual intra-office sexual relationships.

The production values keep the series visually enticing and the acting is top-notch across the board thanks to a strong cast, but I still remain unconvinced that Blindspot has the goods to become a long-running hit the likes of 24.

The Video

The AVC 1080p encodement of Blindspot framed at 1.78:1 on Blu-ray has good color reproduction and contrast with strong nuance in the shadows, which works for this series that has a lot of scenes set on dark sets or nighttime stakeouts. There is color banding, however, that can be spotted throughout the run of the season. That said this presentation is still very satisfying and completely blows away any streaming or broadcast version you can get.

The Audio

Blindspot get a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix as its only audio option. The dialogue drives the series, but there are some mild atmospheric effects mostly in the form of the electronic musical score that fill the channels. The low-end come alive when there are some explosions and some gunfire.

The Final Assessment

This is a solid season of Blindspot that ramps up the conspiracies for this guilty pleasure action thriller and keeps the production top notch. While it is pure popcorn fun that can be a bit mindless at times, the Blu-ray offered up by Warner looks great and does make for a good binge viewing experience.
