Experienced leader Mark Elder and two future stars give a good turn at La Traviata on Blu-ray from Opus Arte
In spite of a gripping performance of the title role from Ermanela Jaho, the rest of this production of La Traviata is somewhat of a disappointment in staging and supporting cast.
In a field already crowded with excellent Blu-ray Discs of Verdi’s biggest hit, La Traviata, this new one comes in near the bottom. Sub-par singing of its lead soprano is further disadvantaged by boxy and occasionally distorted sound.
Unconventionally staged in the Sydney harbor by Francesca Zambello, this updated version of La Traviata produces some wondrous sights and sounds. Soprano Emma Matthews carries the day and viewers get a real sensory feast from this 2012 production.
Renee Fleming reprises her lead role in Verdi’s La Traviata, from the Royal Opera House, under the expert baton of Antonio Pappano. This is a generally well done performance that should satisfy devout Verdians as well as newcomers.
