The Film

[Rating:4/5]

Writer/Director Daryl Wein’s Lola Versus is breath of fresh air in the world of romantic comedies. The indie film zones in on the Gen Y experience in a hip and untainted fashion without the fluff of Hollywood cliché we have come to expect from almost every rom-com that comes down the pipe these days. Starring Greta Gerwig (Damsels in Distress) in the titular role as a young Manhattanite closing in on her 30th birthday whose fiancé Luke (Joel Kinnaman; TV’s The Killing) dumps her right before their wedding, Lola Versus is a journey through the lives of the insecure, uncertain, an inexperienced, despite their metropolitan surroundings and bohemian lifestyles.

When Luke dumps Lola, it sets her on a downward spiral emotionally that she must turn to her closet friends for help fixing. Her best friends Alice (Zoe Lister Jones) and Henry (Hamish Linklater) don’t prove much consolation. A poorly thought out sexual fling with Henry only leads to turmoil as Lola is still in love with Luke, who also happens to be best friends with Henry. So Lola heads back into the dating pool where she finds even more unacceptable men.

This heady material may sound more dramatic than it actually is. In fact, it’s all played rather breezily yet with much. And despite the seriousness of the circumstances (at one point one of Lola’s dates has sex with her and is adamant about not using a condom despite her protestations), Wein’s and Lister Jones’ screenplay remains comical.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Lola Versus looks natural and has a good layer grain that provides strong textural information that makes the image seem three-dimensional and organic. Colors are rich, particularly in the midtones and there aren’t any anomalies to speak. of.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The mix for Lola Versus is dialogue-driven, but the alternative/AAA soundtrack livens things up with a good spread of sound across the front and boosts of ambience in the surround channels. Dialogue is full and clean in the center.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

Lola Versus is an interesting new, modern twist on the romantic comedy that avoids all the pitfalls normally associated with the genre. Greta Gerwig provides a realistic and energized performance without overdoing or over thinking her part, and the Blu-ray is satisfying all around.
