The Film

What do you do when you have a bestselling novel about relationships? Well, you turn it into a middling Hollywood rom-com that is only palatable due to the likability of its lead actors of course. At least that is certainly the case with Something Borrowed, based on the novel by Emily Giffin. This film resides in that mythical New York City that exists in films and on television sitcoms where the streets are always clean, everyone is beautiful, wears fabulous clothes, lives in posh brownstones, drives expensive cars, and never seems to be working.
In this wonderland metropolis we find Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin; TV’s Big Love; Ramona and Beezus). She’s a good girl who has always done the right thing. She got good grades, went to law school, and has been a devoted friend to her best friend from childhood Darcy (Kate Hudson; Bride Wars; How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days). Now its her 30th birthday and with Darcy getting married to dreamboat Dex, Rachel is feeling lonely and inadequate. She introduced the couple, having been friends and study partners with Dex in college, and now she feels like she always loses out to Darcy. But a funny thing happens after her big birthday bash when Dex comes back after the party clears out to find Darcy’s ridiculously expensive purse – the two get to talking and hang out for a couple of beers when Rachel lets it slip that she had a big crush on him in college. Apparently he felt the same and the two end up sleeping together.
Well, that’s certainly not good, what about Darcy and the upcoming wedding? Rachel doesn’t want to hurt her best friend and Dex, well, he just doesn’t know what to do. The two eventually try their hand at a secret romance that doesn’t exactly work to anyone’s benefit. And poor Rachel, she has to hear it from her guy-pal Ethan (John Krasinski; TV’s The Office) constantly about how Dex is just stringing her along and Darcy wouldn’t have hesitated to make a move if the shoe were on the other foot. Meanwhile, with Rachel and Dex acting all strange around each other suddenly, one wonders how in the world Darcy could miss all the clues constantly.
Kate Hudson gets top billing in this flick, but it really is the cutesy charm of Ginnifer Goodwin that holds this one together. She makes you like her even when she’s stabbing her best friend in the back by sleeping with her fiancé.
Video Quality

Something Borrowed looks pretty good. The AVC 1080p encodement from Warner has a thin layer of grain that remains rather consistent throughout, offering a fine film-like presentation of the production. Flesh tones are natural, contrast is strong while blacks are deep and white levels do not clip. Color reproduction is strong as well and there is a nice nuanced palette with strong details that really show up in the numerous club scenes.
Audio Quality

The DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is rather front-heavy as one would expect for a film such as this, but there are ample moments such as the opening scene during Rachel’s birthday party or the nightclub scene in the Hamptons that yield a big and spacious soundstage with resounding bass. Dialogue is crystal clear and the surround channels have a decent amount of atmospherics though they do tend to sound a bit stagnant at times.

It’s not very inventive and dips into TV sitcom land, but Ginnifer Goodwin is still quite likable in this middling rom-com from Warner.
