The Series

[Rating:3/5]

Best of Ancient Aliens is a collection that brings together the first episode from each four seasons of The History Channel’s popular paranormal documentary series Ancient Aliens. The series on the whole brings together a number of purported experts in their fields who examine the anecdotal evidence left throughout several periods of history to explain certain phenomena and technological feats as evidence of likely encounters with otherworldly visitors throughout humanity’s history. Whether you buy into it or not depends on whether or not you are predisposed to believe in alien visitations, UFOs, and the like.

The Episodes:

  • The Evidence – from Season 1, this sets out a general thesis for proof of contact with aliens in our ancient history, from the argument that “flying carpets” could have been flying machines to the manna referred to in the bible being a nuclear powered algae food source, which scientists actually build based on descriptions.
  • Mysterious Places – From season 2, this episode covers everything from the mysteries of the Bermuda triangle to the rock formations of the Marcahuasi Plateau in an effort to explain the strange energy “hot spots” around the planet.
  • Aliens and the Old West – Season 3’s first episode takes off from the film Cowboys & Aliens, exploring the Aurora, Texas UFO incident of 1897, where they is reported to be a buried alien, the Serpent mound in Adams County, Ohio, and Native American legends of alien visitations.
  • The Mayan Conspiracy – Were the Mayans given the knowledge of astronomy and mathematics by aliens? The first episode of season four would have you believing it and more as they explore the unexplained when it concerns the Mayans and link it back to possible aliens visitation and technology.

Video Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Numerous video sources make up this series and therefore it doesn’t always look great, but with that being said, even the newer, high definition interview segments look a bit soft and filled with video noise. Colors are also slightly over-saturated with flesh tones that are a bit too reddish at times.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The simple stereo soundtrack is offered in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. It grants a clean narration and average stereo separation for the music and sound effects that support the documentary. With that said, the mix works for this sort of material even if a 5.1 mix would have been nice.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

Ancient Aliens is a series that will appeal to a very limited audience, so if you are likely to enjoy these sorts of paranormal/pop-science documentaries, then this is as good or better than any other. Since this Best Of isn’t exactly new material, it may be a little over priced, but still worth it for fans of the genre.
