The Film(s)

[Rating:4.5/5]

These two OVAs from Sentai Filmworks are the perfect complement to one another. Short, direct, and to the point, each clocks in at just under thirty-minutes long, but packs in a whole lot of entertainment value with excellent animation.

Coicent is a futuristic charmer that takes place in 2710 where the teenage boy Shinichi is on a school field trip to the rebuilt holy city of Nara when he is set upon by an odd white dear that steals his schoolbag. When hi chases after the deer, he runs into a strange and beautiful girl named Toto who falls out of a window. Together the two tour the city and fall in love while being pursued by two brothers and woman known as “Mommy.”

A more straightforward sci-fi mystery of sorts, Five Numbers! Involves four strangers and a black cat who awake on an empty space station when the power fails. Investigating how and why they are there, they find that it is actually a prison and they have each been given a life sentence for crimes they have committed. Now they must find a way to escape before the station fails and they are all killed.

Video Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Both Coicent and Five Numbers! Look superb in their 1080p/24 AVC/MPEG-4 encodements from Sentai Filmworks. Apart from some mild aliasing in Five Numbers! That appears to be part of the original animation and nothing to do with the transfer itself, these transfers are problem-free, with excellent detail, superb color reproduction with no appearances of compression artifacts or noise.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

Both films are provided with original Japanese language tracks and English dubs in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Both films have clean dialogue and ambient mixes that are tightly woven and well balanced with an even blend of front sounds and atmospherics plus discrete sounds in the surround channels. High frequencies are open, airy, and natural while lows seem nicely extended down to the upper low range.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:2/5]

Each OVA is provided with its own set of extras, Five Numbers! having the most, but still not a lot. There are only two interviews for Five Numbers! and then everything else is trailers and clean opening and closing animations.

The supplements provided with this release:

Coicent:

  • Japanese Trailer (1.78:1; 1080p/24)
  • Clean Opening and Closing Animation

Five Numbers!:

  • Interview with Miyu Irino (Voice of Noir 17) (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 00:11:17)
  • Interview with Dai Sato (Scriptwriter) (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 00:17:29)
  • Japanese Trailers (1.78:1; 1080i/60)
  • Disc Credits
  • Also Available on Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4.5/5]

As much as I enjoy feature-length anime films and lengthy anime series, it is also refreshing to come along something enjoyable like these two series that can be put in and completed in under an hour, especially when you’re strapped for time. Both Coicent and Five Numbers! fill the bill nicely with tight story lines and excellent graphics.
