The Film

[Rating:2/5]

Cable network SyFy must be going for a world record of some sort for most numerous amount of inane, B-quality made-for-television movies, because it seems like they throw up a new one or three every week. Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid debuted on the channel this past January in what was an obvious excuse just to draw eyeballs to the screen.

Anyone who grew up in the 1980s must recall teen pop sensations Debbie Gibson and Tiffany and the “rivalry” over which teen queen was the better of the two. Now, for the first time ever, the two finally get to duke it out in this sci-fi B-movie made just for them – there’s even a real cat fight scene.

The story takes place in the Florida Everglades where animal activist Dr. Nikki Riley (Gibson) has been chasing an abnormally huge python that begins to terrorize the local population and wildlife. When Chief Ranger Dr. Terry O’Hara (Tiffany) loses her boyfriend to the snake, the two doctors who can’t see eye-to-eye on how to solve the problem really begin to butt heads. It leads O’Hara to take drastic measures. She begins feeding the local alligators designer steroids that turn them into giants! It’s a showdown of monsters and teen pop divas in this cheese-fest fueled by awful acting and bad special effects. I don’t know if this is meant to be tongue-in-cheek comedy sci-fi, or if it’s really just that bad.

Video Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Video quality wavers in this 1080p AVC encodement from Image. At times it looks clean and lifelike with good flesh tones and strong detail, but other times the image is soft and shows too much video noise.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3/5]

Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid may be supplied with a lossless 5.1 soundtrack in the form of a DTS-HD Master Audio mix, but that’s not saying much. The surround channels are barely utilized and the high frequencies sound harsh and overemphasized. At least the stereo panning is nice and wide and dialogue is clean.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1/5]

I guess one can’t expect much in the way of extras on a release like this. There is a generically titled “featurette” that shows some behind-the-scenes footage and contains some cool interviews with the cast, including the two former teen pop idols Debbie Gibson and Tiffany.

The supplements rundown:

  • Featurette (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 0:11.03)
  • Trailer (1.78:1; 1080p/24)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

If you want to take a peek at the teen queen showdown, then I recommend renting this one, otherwise I say skip it entirely or catch it on one of SyFy’s inevitable re-runs.
