The Film

[Rating:4.5/5]

This feature length profile of the iconic music producer Sir George Martin most noted for his work in the 1960s with legendary band The Beatles offers in depth insight into the life of a musical pioneer. From Martin’s childhood, his years in the military during the war, time spent in the early days at Parlophone producing comedy records for Peter Sellers, among others, to, of course, the groundbreaking technical achievements that would be accomplished with four lads from Liverpool, and beyond, Produced by George Martin is a fascinating journey through the life and career of the man. There are ample interviews with everyone from Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to Cilla Black, Jeff Beck, and Michael Palin. Most of all, however, the film gives Sir George Martin plenty of opportunities to speak for himself and offer up many reminiscences on his career. Lifting the film to new heights is the soundtrack, made up of mostly all music produced by Martin himself.

[Rating:4.5/5]

A wonderful 1080i/60 AVC/MPEG-4 transfer of the film to Blu-ray provides a natural look with lots of detail during the many interview segments and plenty enough crispness with little artifacts during the pans across many of the photographs provided. Some of the old archival footage isn’t quite up to snuff, but that is a given.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

A simple LPCM 2.0 stereo (48kHz/16-bit) soundtrack is on offer here that is more than adequate to convey the dialogue during interviews and showcase the wonderful musical pieces “produced by George Martin” with a natural sound and stereo soundfield.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

Produced by George Martin is a wonderful look back at the influential career of one of the music industry’s greatest recording producers of all time. It is sad, as one finds out in this documentary, that Martin’s hearing, beginning in the 70s, has diminished to the point where he no longer can enjoy music as he once did. This film documents just how much he has left behind for all the rest of us to enjoy still.

  1. George Martin is one of the greatest unsung hero’s of our time. When you listen to some demo versions of Beatle hits especially John Lennon songs you will soon realize how important Mr. Martin was. My hat is off to you Sir George.
