The Bolshoi Ballet has mounted a less conventional, but visually and dramatically effective production of the beloved Tchaikovsky ballet. This Nutcracker has many magic moments with excellent sound and visual recording.
An unusual rethinking of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, Eugene Onegin, is presented by the Nederlandse Opera under the knowing leadership of Mariss Jansons. Well recorded, and generally well sung, this performance is undermined by its wayward directorial concepts.
Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame is given a mostly splendid performance at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with stunning period costumes and sets. The vocalism and music direction is top drawer; the videography borders on sensational.
