Warner to Release 6 Blu-ray 3D Titles with No Hardware Tie-Ins

If you are an early adopter to the 3DTV/Blu-ray 3D format, you have to be feeling the dearth of content. The only Blu-ray 3D titles available have been tied to hardware purchases, with the exception of two of Sony’s titles, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House plus the recently released 3D Music Album from AIX Records, Goldberg Variations Acoustica. There is also at least one Blu-ray 3D IMAX title available in Germany, Grand Canyon Adventure: A River at Risk. Everything else, like Coraline and Ice Age 3 or How to Train Your Dragon requires specific hardware purchases from one brand or another. There have even been recent announcements of forthcoming Blu-ray 3D titles — highly anticipated ones — such as Avatar and Alice and Wonderland, all being tied-in to specific hardware purchases. It’s as if the industry were purposely trying to derail 3D in the home before it could get rolling.

Enter Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The studio today has just announced the forthcoming release of six Blu-ray 3D titles to be made commercially available with no hardware tie-ins. The titles will be released to retailers nationwide on November 16, 2010, will sell at a suggested retail price of $44.95, and include the following, wide-ranging set of releases:

  • Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore 3D (Day-and-Date with Blu-ray and DVD)
  • Clash of the Titans (2010) 3D
  • The Polar Express 3D
  • IMAX® Deep Sea 3D
  • IMAX® Under the Sea 3D
  • IMAX® Space Station 3D

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore 3D is the industry’s first day-and-date 3D release in the theatrical new release window. Furthermore, Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore 3D and Clash of the Titans 3D will be released as Blu-ray 3D Combo Packs, which will include both the 3D and 2D versions on Blu-ray, a DVD and a Digital Copy of the film.

All the rest of the titles will also include both the 2D and 3D versions of the film and can be played back on 3D and non-3D Blu-ray players.

Famed oceanic filmmaker Howard Hall (“Into the Deep”) guides this immersive adventure that lets you swim alongside some of the most exotic creatures of the planet. Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet provide the narration. And an unusual array of finned and scaled stars are ready to steal every scene. Among them: Green Sea Turtles who gather off Kona so that Surgeonfish can strip harmful algae from their shells…an ominous, predatory Humboldt Squid that changes color four times per second like a flashing strobe light…an underdog Mantis Shrimp, whose claws have the speed of a 22-caliber bullet, in battle against a hungry octopus (the shrimp wins!). Directed by Toni Myers, Space Station is a story of challenges, setbacks and triumphs and ultimately, the shared international victory of men and women whose dreams exceed the limits of life on this Earth. This Blu-ray 3D disc will have both 3D and 2D playback capabilities.
