The Film

Cheech & Chong’s Animated Movie finds the two best buddies mixing in bits and pieces of their Grammy Award-winning albums, as well as some of their more infamous routines. Along for the journey is a trippy, bud-lovin’ body crap named Buster, who helps to deliver classics like “Dave’s Not Here” and “Let’s Make a Dope Deal.” Some of the skits include “Ralph and Herbie,” “Earache My Eye” and “Up His Nose”, of whose topics include feces, Jewish stereotypes and breaking the rules.

We all know that Cheech & Chong are well known for their marijuana-loving ways, the whole being ‘high’. As an occasional user myself, here’s a bit of a recommendation before watching this disc – a little bit of medicinal assistance might be warranted. It’s not to say that this kind of humor is not something that will attract everyone, but being a bit ‘high’ will not only put you in their shoes, but will also help make the humor funnier. Similar to a series like South Park, the humor is topical, but also quite enjoyable. What has made Matt Stone & Trey Parker’s South Park so successful is their simple use of current events. While Cheech & Chong don’t have the benefits of having a seasonal series, we’re able to see the connection between Stone/Park and Cheech & Chong.

Cheech & Chong’s animated movie smokes its way onto Blu-ray with a 1.85:1 framed, AVC/MPEG-4 transfer, one that looks fairly solid. The image has a consistently clean look and feel to it; however, in comparison to other animated offerings, this falls a bit short. Colors are accurate, as is clarity. There’s also no notice of noise, nor any source issues. Blame it on budget or how they wanted the image to look, just know this – this transfer is mostly solid and will please fans. Just don’t expect the same kind of quality that other big animated titles have.

Audio-wise, we’re given a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. Dialogue, while it sounded like it had been previously recorded, sounded fine via the center channel. Outside of the dialogue, a majority of the track leans towards the front channels (minus a few concert scenes, which do open up the soundfield a bit.) All in all, this mix suits the film well.

For fans of both Cheech Marin & Tommy Chong, their journey into their very first animated film has been met with success. Equally solid is Fox’s Blu-ray for the film, with a serviceable V/A presentation, and a few solid features. Recommended for fans of the ‘high’ duo.
