Boots Riley’s Chaotic Genius Returns

Boots Riley doesn’t make movies that sit quietly in the corner. They kick the door open, dump paint on capitalism, and then dare you to laugh while the room burns. I Love Boosters keeps that streak alive. Loudly. If you walked out of Sorry to Bother You wondering how Riley could possibly top that level of controlled chaos, this new film comes dangerously close.

Full Disclosure: From Sorry to Bother You to I Love Boosters

Sorry to Bother You was my favorite film of that year. I still have not watched the Prime series I’m a Virgo, so I came into I Love Boosters with a split-down-the-middle, could-go-either-way mindset. After spending a nice morning at the movie theater, I can say that I Love Boosters rocked. Riley has returned with another savage satire, this time aimed directly at fashion culture, luxury branding, and the rotten machinery underneath consumer desire.

A Hilarious, Hard-Hitting Premise

The premise alone is funny enough. A crew of shoplifters targets a ruthless fashion mogul by stealing expensive designer clothing and reselling it cheaply to everyday people. They call it “fashion-forward philanthropy,” which sounds ridiculous until you realize the film completely means it.

The Anger Beneath the Laughter

What makes the movie hit isn’t just the humor. It’s the anger underneath it. Riley turns the fashion industry into a grotesque carnival where exploited labor fuels status symbols people can barely afford. Designer labels become cult objects. Wealthy consumers float through sterile palaces draped in fabrics built on the backs of underpaid workers. The satire lands because it never feels abstract. It feels ugly, familiar, and just exaggerated enough to sting. Make no mistake: the title itself is an obvious play on words. The film has nothing to do with boosters or jabs, which honestly makes the marketing even funnier. Riley knows exactly how to bait reactions before the movie even starts.

Visual Insanity: Hyper-Stylized and Unforgettable

Visually, the film is insane in the best way possible. I Love Boosters has some of the wildest production design I’ve seen this year, leaning hard into a hyper-stylized baroque aesthetic filled with towering fashion displays, surreal interiors, and nightmare storefront imagery. Riley throws genre elements into a blender and somehow keeps control of all of it. Horror imagery sneaks in unexpectedly. Stop-motion animation crashes into scenes like a fever dream. Miniatures show up during the final act and give the movie a handmade storybook quality that feels both old-school and deeply unsettling. The energy never lets up. Every frame looks handcrafted, sweaty, and alive. Even when the movie threatens to spiral completely off the rails, that unpredictability becomes part of the fun.

Ensemble Cast and Minor Critiques

The ensemble cast locks into Riley’s bizarre wavelength almost immediately, delivering performances that feel heightened without tipping into parody. Everybody understands the assignment. The movie asks them to exist inside a world where absurdity is normal, and they commit fully. That commitment keeps the satire sharp instead of turning it into sketch comedy. There were only a couple of moments where certain punchlines or visual gags lingered a little too long. A tighter edit in a few spots could have made the pacing even stronger. Still, those minor stumbles barely register once the film reaches its final stretch.

Final Verdict: A Top-Tier Original

As much as I loved Sorry to Bother You, I Love Boosters comes very close to matching that high for me. It’s easily one of the most original films released this year and absolutely a top-three contender so far. Riley once again proves he’s operating on a completely different frequency than most filmmakers working today. The movie is funny, abrasive, surreal, messy, stylish, and completely locked into its worldview. You may not agree with every point it makes, but you sure as hell won’t forget it once the credits roll. I want a 4K disc release now!
