The Film

[Rating:0.5/5]

The original 1978 version of The Day of the Woman (later renamed I Spit on Your Grave) has become infamous for its prolonged, graphic scenes of rape and a second half that consisted of the bloody and violent revenge of its protagonist. The 2010 remake from director Steven R. Monroe follows the same pattern of its original inspiration, however, removed from the nostalgic 1970’s vibe and somewhat tempered in its sexual violence, I Spit on Your Grave falls into the category of “pointless remake that is worse than the original.”

The story is the same, Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler) a writer from New York, drives up to the country to a secluded cabin to get some quiet, writing time where she is brutally attacked by a group of townies. After they have had there way with her, she escapes and returns to dole out her own, bloody vengeance.

The first half of the film is timid compared to the 1978 version, not having the daring to go as far in graphically portraying the sexual assault. The second half of the film comes across like a poor man’s version of a Saw film. The overall effect is a dull film, just as silly as the original, but with even less watchability than its predecessor.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The 2.35:1 AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding is clean with strong detail and natural flesh tones, but the black levels aren’t as deep as they could be, tending towards a greyish appearance overall.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack is average at best. Although it offers clean and intelligible dialogue, the overall mix is on the boring side. There’s not much activity throughout the film in the surround channels, only some occasional atmospherics and discrete sounds that tend to sound a bot disconnected from the rest of the mix.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1.5/5]

The supplements on this remake of I Spit on Your Grave are hardly compelling. Only the disc’s audio commentary is truly worth going through, everything, such as the brief making of featurette The Revenge of Jennifer Hills and the various trailers and TV spots feel tacked on.

  • Audio Commentary with Director Steven R. Monroe and Producer Lisa Hansen
  • The Revenge of Jennifer Hills: Remaking a Cult Icon (2.35:1; 480i/60; 0:16.25) – The filmmakers and cast discuss working on the remake of I Spit on Your Grave.
  • Deleted Scenes (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 0:11.43) – Played continuously.
  • Trailers (2.35:1; 1080p/24):
    • Teaser Trailer
    • Theatrical Trailer
    • Theatrical Trailer #2
  • Radio Spot

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:2.5/5]

The 2010 rendition of I Spit on Your Grave offers no real advantages over the 1978 original, but the Blu-ray release is still decent enough home theatre entertainment, if you’re into this sort of film. Still, my recommendation would be to skip this one entirely.
