The Film

[Rating:4.5/5]

Quick (, Qwik) is an aptly described action/comedy/thriller out of South Korea directed by Cho Beom-gu. Comparable to a film like Speed, Quick contains roughly an explosion a minute (I didn’t really count, but it seemed like something like that) and the action starts right from the beginning. The story follows a former motorcycle gang member in Seoul named Han Gi-soo (Lee Min-ki). Six years after he was involved in a large street racing altercation that resulted in massive collisions and his girlfriend leaving him, he’s been working as a motorcycle messenger, the fastest one there is. When he receives a job to pick up a passenger who turns out to be his old girlfriend Choon-sim (Kang Ye-won), who is now a singer in a K-Pop girl band named OK Girls, it sets off a string of events that puts both of their lives in danger. A stranger switches out his helmet with one triggered with a bomb that Choon-sim can’t remove without it blowing up. Furthermore, the two cannot be separated by more than 10 meters without the bomb exploding. The stranger forces Han Gi-soo to make deliveries within a certain time frame to major corporations around Seoul that turn out to be bombs. Han Gi-soo and Choon-Sim find themselves being pursued by an inept police force, among them one of their former gangbangers who just happens to be in love with Choon-sim. Meanwhile, an intricate web of corporate intrigue continues got be uncovered behind the scenes as Han Gi-soo and Choon-sim find themselves in escalating amounts of danger.

Quick is just a spectacular action film that is easy to watch because of its wonderful sense of humor. The nonstop car chases, jumps, explosions, and fight scenes are a real thrill, even if the CG work sometimes looks just little wonky.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Captured using the Red One MX high definition cinematographic camera at 4K resolution, Quick comes with a strong AVC/MPEG-4 1080p/24 encodement from Shout! Factory. While there is a little bit of video noise and some slight instances of posterization, most likely inherent to the source, the overall effect of the film in motion is a good one with strong details and a medium to high breadth of contrast. Colors pop nicely, such as the yellows of Choon-sim’s outfit.

Audio Quality

[Rating:5/5]

Like the film itself, the Korean DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack smacks you in the face with sounds. The roar of engines, the boom of explosions, the screeching of tires – these things come at you from every channel supported by lots of low frequencies and rather listenable high frequencies. Dialogue is balanced well into the mix, but I’ll leave the call on whether it is intelligible or not to those native speakers of Korean. There is also an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) dub provided alongside lossy Korean Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 tracks.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:2/5]

The supplements are all rather self-explanatory, but nothing here is particularly interesting viewing.

  • Action (1.33:1; up-scaled 1080i; 00:17:00)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4.5/5]

A mixture of petrol, adrenalin, full throttle action, and comedy, Quick is a humorous action winner that will keep you glued to the screen and at the edge of your seat. If you like quick-paced action films, this is the film for you. The Blu-ray could hardly get any better than this.
