The Performance

[Rating:3.5/5]

Staind’s brand of post-grunge/nu-metal/alternative rock has never appealed to me much, even as the band channels influences from artists I tend to appreciate, such as Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Metallica, and KoRn. With that being said, since forming in 1995, they have managed to maintain a solid and loyal fan base and they are arguably a much stronger live act than they are in the studio, which is why I didn’t dislike this live release from Eagle Rock, Staind: Live from Mohegan Sun, as much as I initially thought I would. Even as many of the tracks tend to bleed from one whiny, depressing dirge into another, the powerful drumming and riff-laden guitar attacks help raise the level of the show and detract from Aaron Lewis’ whiny, mumbly and comatose vocal style.

Track Listing:

  1. Eyes Wide Open
  2. Falling
  3. Right Here
  4. Throw It All Away
  5. Spleen
  6. Fade
  7. Failing
  8. So Far Away
  9. Crawl
  10. For You
  11. Paper Wings
  12. Outside
  13. Not Again
  14. It’s Been Awhile
  15. Mudshovel
  16. Something To Remind You

What much can be said about this 1080i/60 AVC encodement? It, like most concert videos, is hardly the best source of videophile material, but it gets the job done with a relatively life-like appearance and natural color reproduction. It does tend to suffer from some motion artifacts, video noise, and blown out white levels, but it can’t really be helped.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

The audio is really where it’s at on this release, especially if you are talking about the particularly well done DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) mix. It is beefy, with deep, musical lows, a good separation of instrumentation, clean vocals and punchy midrange. It also offers lush amounts of performance space acoustics in the surround channels that help broaden the soundstage. The whole thing really collapses, however, when moving to the LPCM 2.0 (48kHz/24-bit) stereo mix, which seems overly dry and dynamically squeezed just a bit.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:2/5]

There aren’t any bonus performances here, but fans do get an interview with the band and a look at Mike Mushok’s numerous touring guitars.

The supplements:

  • Interview with the Band (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 00:30:59)
  • Mike Mushok’s Live Rig (1.78:1; 00:05:18)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

For fans of Staind’s brand of hard rock, this latest effort from Eagle Rock offers ample amounts of home theatre enjoyment.
