The Film

[Rating:3/5]

Remember The Exorcist, The Ring, The Haunting, Poltergeist? The irreverent homage to thriller/horror movies receives a significant makeover in Scary Movie 2. In this second edition, not truly a sequel, no punches are pulled and political incorrectness abounds. Fortunately, campy and committed performances by the leads (Anna Faris, the Wayans brothers, Chris Elliott, Tim Curry and Toris Spelling)  save this over-the-top production from being a forgettable snoozer. The videography is beyond reproach and, in the best of class B movies, the direction begs, borrows, and steals from all of its predecessors. There is nonstop bad taste, and downright freakiness that makes for an hour and a half of chuckles, hopefully in a well sheltered environment with friends who share a common taste for this sophomoric film genre. Of course, the recurrent offensive nature of some scenes (such as the group dinner) might be off putting to some viewers.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The video quality of this recent release is generally excellent with surprisingly little graininess. The special effects, like Chris Elliott’s gross hand, the killer plant, and the boxing kitty, are top notch. The facial close ups are well detailed and crisp. The distance shots of the haunted house show the usual B-movie artificiality but beyond that, the indoor sets are reasonably effective.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3/5]

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack conveys few surround effects, keeping most of the action is up front. The lack of atmospheric noises, given the need for atmosphere in a movie simulating its serious horror predecessors, was a disappointment.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:3.5/5]

Thankfully, there are some generous featurettes offered in this 10th anniversary reissue:

  • Behind the Scenes
  • Behind the Makeup
  • Here Kitty, Kitty
  • “Scary Effects”
  • A Special Effects tour
  • Deleted and Alternate Scenes

These short subjects augment the fun, although the extra scenes were justifiably left on the cutting room floor and would have added little more to this movie other than length.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

This is another frivolous entry in the “Scary Movie” series.  There are no pretenses of cinematic greatness here, just mindless fun. Be prepared for non-stop take-offs on nearly every horror and thriller genre of the past two decades. Some episodes work better than others, although the Charlie’s Angels/Kill Bill sequence near the end approaches classic status. Keenan Ivory Wayans revives his brothers’ Ray and Shorty personae from White Chicks, although the “house bunny” Anna Faris steals every scene that she inhabits. Not a vast improvement over the original Scary Movie, but not a step down either. Leave your inhibitions at the door, and make this BD another guilty pleasure like I did.
