With Scary Movie 3 the Scary Movie franchise moves on to spoofing horror movies of this era, including The Ring, and Signs. Befitting this genre, we are treated with B-movie film legends, Pamela Lee Anderson, Charlie Sheen, Jeremy Piven, Anna Faris, and last but not least, Queen Latifah. Oh, and by the way, there are some en pointe cameos by the late, great comic talents Leslie Nielsen and George Carlin. Sophomoric humor runs rampant here, as was the case in its predecessors. However, director, David Zucker and writers Craig Mazin and Pat Proft, seemed to have run out of the proverbial gas when it came to breaking any new ground or improving on the originals. Scary Movie 3 does have its moments as do all of the Scary series. They just don’t come as fast or furious as the earlier Scaries.

The resolution and color palette of this film are consistently top notch. The handling of the alien costumes is in the best B-movie tradition. Special effects are appropriately campy and steal effectively from the films that inspired them. To my eyes, the cinematography was better than its immediate predecessor SM 2. While this film was “unrated,” the only reasons that I could gather for this labeling were the few gross out sequences involving animals and frat boys in the alien invasion clips.

An effective and discrete use of surround effects, mostly for ambience, come from the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack which is slightly better than its linear PCM 2.0 counterpart.

The three deleted scenes deserved their fate, while the “making of” is a relatively perfunctory walk through of SM3’s filming.

It is fair to say that when the Scary Movie series got to its third installment and second director, the tank was starting to run low on petrol. Unlike the previous Scary Movies which took aim at numerous horror movies, this one tends to aim mostly at Signs and The Ring, neither of which was a particularly distinguished target. Excellent cinematography, highlighting eye-candylicious Anna Faris at every opportunity, saves some of the day. The best “acting” contributions come from the reliably dead-pan comic great, Leslie Nielsen and, all but too brief cameo by funny man George Carlin. Scary Movie 3 is a mildly diverting hour and a half but not nearly as over-the-top campy as its much more enjoyable predecessors. Mostly for Scary Movie series hardcores rather than for newbies.
