Adventure Time‘s second season expands the universe for Finn the human (Jeremy Shada) and his best friend Jake (John DiMaggio) over the previous season. A world of new, unique, and eccentric characters pop up as well as favorites from the original season, like Princess Bubblegum ( Hynden Walch), and Ice King ( Tom Kenny). A new foe for Finn and Jake emerges in Season Two, The Lich (Ron Perlman; Sons of Anarchy). The second season continues along similar lines as the first, with Finn and Jake involved in various adventures, most of them dealing with helping various people, like rescuing princesses kidnapped by the Ice King, or, in “It Came from the Nightosphere”, Finn helps Marceline come to terms with the strained relationship between her and her dad, who also happens to be a soul-sucking demon. The season also sees Finn exploring his feelings for Princesses Bubblegum more, such as in the episode “Go With Me”, where he struggles for the best way to ask her out to the movies.

Mostly, however, it is more zany and cynical fun that adolescents and adults alike can cherish. All twenty-six mini episodes are a surreal comic experience that play off of the fantasy genre cliches and archetypes ingrained in the pop culture, but they do it with a tongue-in-cheek pizazz that belies their lowest target demographic. This is like the best of the Looney Tunes cartoons – the younger you are, the least likely you are to understand everything that’s going on, but Adventure Time never crosses the line of being too much for youngsters in the prime time viewing audience.

The 1080p/24 VC-1 encodement of Adventure Time: Season Two continues the strong high definition presence of the series on Blu-ray with a clean, crisp, and vivid encodement free from any video noise, color banding, aliasing, or compression issues. This is top notch.

We still only get a lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track with Season Two of Adventure Time on Blu-ray. While it works, it is just a little closed-in and unnatural, but the dialogue is full and clear, which is all one can ask for.

Adventure-Time-S2-BD_04

Season Two of Adventure Time on Blu-ray comes with a better selection of supplements. Each episode has a commentary, and there’s an interview of the crew by Pendleton Ward. It’s better than the offbeat featurettes included with Adventure Time: Season One.

  • The Crew of Adventure Time, Interviewed by Pendleton Ward
  • Commentaries for all 26 episodes

A positively outrageous second season that solidifies Adventure Time as truly unique, experimental, and stand-out animation, this series of twenty-six mini episodes is both enticing to look at and highly amusing. Recommended for the kid in you, and for fans of animation.
