From Helen Fielding’s novel, which in turn sprang from her newspaper column, came Bridget Jones’s Diary, 2001’s surprisingly charming romantic comedy starring Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Colin Firth. An inspiration to single women everywhere, Bridget Jones’s Diary follows a year in the life of its namesake character, Bridget (Zellweger).

The British Jones is single, a bit overweight, and turning 32, so she decides for the new year, she’s going to take charge of her life. She’s going to stop smoking, stop drinking so much, and lose weight, while logging it all in her diary. Not so fast – her rapscallion of a boss (Hugh Grant) takes interest in her and so does an off-putting acquaintance (Colin Firth) she met at her parents’ Christmas party. While the awkward Bridget finds herself mixed up in an unlikely love triangle, she must seek comfort amongst her colorful group of city-dwelling friends.

Bridget Jones’s Diary is witty, humorous, and clever, with a pitch perfect performance from Zellweger who both plays a believably frumpy “singleton” and carries off a nearly flawless British accent to boot. The chemistry between she and Hugh Grant is cute, whilst Colin Firth also puts in a solid performance as Grant’s foe for Jones’s affections.

Video Quality

While this AVC 1080p/24 transfer of Bridget Jones looks generally strong with little in the way of source damage or any overt processing issues such as edge enhancement and the like, the overall image looks just a bit flat. It also sometimes washes out just a tad in the darker areas, even while the blacks look generally deep and shadow details are nicely extended. The transfer’s strongest area is in its flesh tones which are spot on straight through.

Audio Quality

The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack doesn’t offer much. It has little in the way of atmospherics in the surround channels and even has some crackle in the dialogue.

Forget about getting any new HD extras here. Everything is ported over from the older DVD release and is in standard definition. It’s also all rather lighthearted and geared towards lavishing praise on the supposed social phenomenon that is or was Bridget Jones.

A clever and witty film that hit right when Sex and the City was just coming to television, Bridget Jones’s Diary is one of the better made, mature romantic comedies that obviously plays to the strengths of its key demographic while not alienating the other half too much.
