Details_1

The Devil’s in the Details tells the story of Thomas Conrad (Joel Matthews), an army veteran who wants nothing more than to get back to living his life at home with his family. All this changes after he gets entangled with drug cartel enforcer Bill Duffy (Emilio Rivera.) After Thomas is kidnapped and tortured, he’s given an ultimatum: help smuggle a fortune in drugs across the Mexican border or witness the murder of his family. Enlisting the help of his Navy SEAL friend Bruce Michaels (Ray Liotta), Thomas must now figure out how to save his family and bring down the cartel. What results is a film that is rather by-the-books, but is still entertaining thanks to a few solid performances.

Details_2

Even though the story of The Devil’s in the Details has a very basic plot that we’ve seen a few times over, with the whole person kidnapped/family held hostage  the acting in the film (particularly that of Liotta) does help to make this one worth looking into. Liotta, just as in a few of his other performances, has that grit, will, and determination to help his former friend see this through. Yes, this plot has been done before, however, Hollywood keeps revisiting it simply because it works. Seeing family members in peril will always result in (at the bare minimum) an entertaining film (not always necessarily good though.) Liotta helps to make this one worth checking out.

Details_3

The Devil’s in the Details arrives with a 2.40:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer. Shot using the famed Red One Camera system, the film’s color palette tends to have a rather drab look and feel to it. Akin to that of the audio mix, a majority of the colors fluctuate (clarity wise.) Stylistically this was probably Cinematographer Kevin McMahon, all of which was done to showcase the emotions the character Thomas was going through. While some may find this to be a problem, this decision by McMahon saved the film in my eye (as we connected more with Thomas.)

The film includes a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, one of which is one of the more interesting mixes I’ve heard in sometime. Dialogue is well reproduced throughout via the center channel. Some of the film’s sound effects do fade in and out, creating a unique sense of atmosphere. This isn’t a sound design flaw, but rather is done to show what the character of Thomas is going through. The sudden fading in and out creates an odd sound mix, but one that (kind of) helps the film. Personally, I found it to be a bit annoying (but I think that’s more the fault of the film itself.) Regardless, the sound mix does its job – as odd as it may be.

Details_6

Despite being a rather mundane film, The Devil’s in the Details  has some entertaining moments thanks to a solid performance by veteran Ray Liotta. Image has delivered a mostly solid Blu-ray, with a fine video presentation, acceptable audio mix, but no real features. I’m going to leave this one in the ‘dreary, rainy day rental’ category.
