The Film

[Rating:3/5]

English professors may drive themselves into a frenzy trying to tear this poor little film apart given that it is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, but despite being no more than a predictable rom-com in need of of a little more of that Latin spice it promised, From Prada to Nada is ultimately pleasant nonetheless.

A typical fish out of water tale, From Prada to Nada finds two young Mexican-American women of privilege from Beverly Hills thrust into the working class world of East L.A. and the Latin heritage they’ve long been told stories of, but know nothing about when their loving father dies leaving them nothing but debt, a surprise half-brother, and a sister-in-law who casts them out of their luxurious mansion.

Moving into their aunt’s humble home forces the sisters Nora (Camilla Belle; Push; 10,000 BC) and Mary (Alexa Vega; TV’s The Middle; Spy Kids) to reassess their priorities. This comes easier for the older Nora who’s always been more focused, worldly in her views, and had a ten-year plan to become a lawyer with everything else, including romance, coming in a distant second. For Mary, however, life in “the ghetto” just seems like a nightmare. How will she cope? Maybe by grabbing up the hot, rich, Mexican teacher’s assistant from her literature class, marrying him and getting him to buy back her old mansion!

For Nora, it’s all about deferring school, getting a job at a law firm, and working her way to the top, the only thing is, it get’s complicated when romance unexpectedly rears its head for her and her sister-in-law’s brother Edward (Nicholas D’Agosto; Fired Up!; Drive Thru).

Prada is filled with some ethnic and class-driven caricatures that are rather unworthy of a comedy created in 2011, but the film still manages to rise above this and offer up some fine family values, a series of cute of predictable romances, and lots of warmth and charm.

Video Quality

The vibrant, sunny colors of Southern California and of Latin culture spring to life in this clean and detailed AVC encodement from Lionsgate. It shows no signs of video noise, has rich midtones, shimmering primary colors, and extended detail in the foreground and background imagery.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack doesn’t use the surround channels for many discrete effects, but they layer a good amount of atmospherics on the big, open sound of the mix. It really comes alive with the various pop and Latin pop-influenced songs. Dialogue is clear, concise, and shows no signs of crackle.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

From Prada to Nada is hardly literary genius. It doesn’t even rise to the level of Clueless when it comes to reworking Jane Austen’s work, but this modern take on Sense and Sensibility is still well worth watching for its pleasant entertainment value.
