SUMMARY

A mysterious figure called The Monitor gathers the greatest superheroes from multiple Earths to help stop multiple universes and their Earths from collapsing into oblivion.

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One is the first of a three-part original animated film based on the DC Comics storyline “Crisis on Infinite Earths” (1985–1986) by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. The storyline has also been used in the DC Arrowverse TV series.

The complete destruction of all Earths across every universe is imminent. A mysterious figure calling himself the Monitor gathers the greatest metahumans from multiple Earths, including multiple versions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, their variants, and others to help stop the destruction. Meanwhile, Barry Allen/The Flash is sent on a journey through time and multiple dimensions by an aged Constantine that may uncover the secret to success.

The film brings back many of the familiar DC voice actors like Jensen Ackles as Batman, Darren Criss as Superman, and Stana Katic as Wonder Woman. While there are good action and superb visuals in this, the story becomes a little difficult to follow given the sprawling timeline, multiple versions of characters, and lack of clarity on who exactly the protagonist is supposed to be.

The Video

The 1.78:1 HEVC 2160p (4K UHD) HDR10 encodement of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths is satisfying yet not perfect. The colors are vibrant, and detail is strong and crisp, with no issue with the line art showing any sort of aliasing and fills have no compression noise or posterization. I did see banding in areas, however, so it is not completely clean. The HDR10 adds some slight ‘pop’ to the highlights and a little more color than one might see on a Blu-ray.

The Audio

The lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is more reserved than I expected it to be. The low end is just a little anemic and the surrounds are subtle, carrying a little atmospherics and some solid sound effects mixed rather low. Otherwise, there are good dynamics and very clear dialogue with listenable high frequencies.

The Supplements

There are only two on-disc extras with this release, which comes packaged in a gorgeous SteelBook case. There is also a clip from Part Two available with the digital version.

  • Movies Anywhere Digital Code
  • Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One: Crisis Prime(r) (1080p; 00:09:39)
  • Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One: The Selfless Speedster (1080p; 00:08:02)
  • Silent Treatment – Film clip from Justice League Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Two (Digital Only)

The Final Assessment

This trilogy gets off to a bit of a rocky start, but since this is a setup film, one can perhaps overlook some of its storyline issues. The ending leaves one wanting to see what happens next, and the 4K release, while not perfect, is strong enough to want to own on disc.
