The Film

[Rating:3.5/5]

Forget about Tom Cruise’s offscreen antics, the guy obviously still has a certain charm that translates pretty well onto the big screen, particularly, it seems, when playing the sort of quirky, off-kilter character required of him in this action romantic comedy, Knight and Day, from director James Mangold (Walk the Line; Girl Interrupted; 3:10 to Yuma).

Imagine Jason Bourne without the angst and the grit, and you have the essence of Knight and Day, a light and fun-filled, globetrotting action comedy romance that finds Cruise as secret agent Roy Miller, who’s just discovered that his last assignment may indeed be his “last;” he’s been targeted for assassination. He needs to protect his “client,” the young inventor Simon Feck (Paul Dano) and the invention that everyone wants. Into this chaos, Roy pulls the unsuspecting June Havens (Cameron Diaz), when he uses her suitcase to slip Simon’s invention past inspection at the airport. Thus, poor June ends up on the thrill ride of her life with the guy she first thought might have been the man of her dreams, but soon starts to suspect might have a few screws loose. Should she stay with him for protection, as he keeps telling her she needs to do, or get away to the government agents telling her that Roy is dangerous and unstable?

The absolute chemistry between Cruise and Diaz never quite develops, but the individual charisma of each of the actors helps carry the film a long way through its total absurdity. Cameron Diaz, long bogged down in a wasteland of drab romantic comedies, is a natural comedic talent, and she does help to bring that out of Cruise, whose off-screen persona only seems to help the weirdness of this madcap adventure.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Knight and Day is full of richly saturated colors and strong textures that you can almost touch. The AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding captures them all nicely with a layer of grain that keeps everything looking surprisingly organic and film-like given the amount of special effects, but the image does occasionally tend towards grittiness and soften in the background details.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is aggressive without being too in-your-face. There’s a lot of headroom left in there, high frequencies are soft, and low frequencies have punch without being absolutely earth shaking. Dialogue is clean with no apparent crackle, but the overall mix is a little inconsistent and often lacking in cohesion.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

Knight and Day is a good, easygoing, action-filled romp to slam down some popcorn to and forget about your week. It offers a decent enough home theatre experience to definitely be worthy of at least priority rental preference on that next rainy weekend in.
