The Film

[Rating:2/5]

The first time around Legally Blonde’s fish out of water story was sort of bearable, particularly given Reese Witherspoon’s obvious abilities and charm; it helped to make the comedy a bit of a surprise hit. As most of us know, however, sequels are often bad news, and this one is no exception.

Witherspoon is back reprising her role as the ditzy blonde charmer Elle, pretty in pink and far better at shopping for Versace than doing anything serious. The surprise law-degree earner loses her job, much to her amazement, when she pushes her firm to take a stance against animal cruelty after finding her dog Bruiser’s mom in a cosmetics testing facility, ironically named v.e.r.s.a.c.e. Instead of throwing in the towel, Elle decides to head to D.C. and become a congresswoman’s (Sally Field) assistant to get the laws on animal testing changed where she gets help from a particularly wise doorman (Bob Newhart) on how to work the system in congress.

Apart from finding out her dog Bruiser is gay and realizing he likes to wear her shoes rather than chew them, there’s not much funny in this lame attempt at making lightning strike twice. It may be ditzier than the first time around, but it’s also a whole lot boringer, err, more boring and just plain ridiculous.

Video Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

You can tell that Fox/MGM put the least bit of effort into bringing this film to Blu-ray, but fortunately Legally Blonde 2 is only 8-years-old. Film does tend to degrade pretty quickly, however, so this AVC/MPEG-4 encodement doesn’t look the sharpest it possibly can. Detail wavers, colors aren’t as vibrant as they could be, whites look a bit unstable, and there is some noticeable source damage. Still, it looks film-like and doesn’t show any harshness or compression artifacts.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

The audio mix for Legally Blonde 2 is typical of these sorts of films. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack pretty much relegates the surround channels to some very low-level ambience and atmospherics leaving the front channels to do most of the work. Dialogue is clear and I didn’t detect any clipping.
