The Performance

[Rating:5/5]

I’ve got a crick in my neck and I’d like to find out who I can contact from AIX Records about getting some compensation, because had they not released Mark Chesnutt: Your Room, this never would have happened! Obviously, I’m kidding, but, in all seriousness, this 15-track greatest hits live in-studio performance from the country music veteran had my head bopping and toes tapping from the the very opening number, “Bubba Shot the Jukebox.” Chesnutt, for the uninitiated, is a native Texan whose music evokes the great Texas honky-tonk heroes like Hank (do we need a last name there?). But like all great artists, he can’t be pigeonholed. Chesnutt is honky tonk, he’s hillbilly, he’s rock ‘n’ roll, he’s rockabilly – he’s got it all. When he’s rockin’ at full throttle, such as on “It’s a Little Too Late,” he can bring the house down, but he can also slow it down and bring you to tears, with mid-tempo ballads like “Too Cold at Home” or the paean to aging without grace, “Rollin’ with the Flow.” AIX Records has a definite best seller on their hands with this hot new country recording.

Track listing:

  1. Bubba Shot the Jukebox
  2. It’s A Little Too Late
  3. What a Way to Live
  4. Too Cold at Home
  5. Gonna Get a Life
  6. Almost Goodbye
  7. It Sure Is Monday
  8. Ol’ Country
  9. Rollin’ With The Flow
  10. Thank God For Believers
  11. Old Flames Have New Names
  12. Blame It on Texas
  13. She Never Got Me Over You
  14. I Just Wanted You to Know
  15. Goin’ Through the Big D

Video Quality

3D Effect: [Rating:5/5]

Captured in 720p, the resulting image here may not have quite the same amount of detail as a 1080p recording and I did notice the slightest hint of video noise and posterization in the black curtains that draped the backgrounds. This is most likely the result of the source rather than the AVC/MPEG-4 (2D) or MVC (3D) encodement. Still, the overall presentation is natural with true-to-life flesh tones and an engaging use of camera angles and edits to keep viewers entertained. The 3D effect is used wisely and actually maintains an equally natural sense of depth. Objects appear realistic and upfront with just a hint of pop-out, rather than any sort of gimmicky poking out at you from the screen.

At this point it should be enough to just simply label this “AIX Records” and be done with, but since I am obliged as a reviewer to offer more than that, I will. This recording of Your Room from Mark Chesnutt and AIX Records, like all AIX releases, is free from all forms of artificial reverberation, dynamic processing, and equalization. The result is a staggering sense of realism and dynamic range, whether you choose to listen to the LPCM 2.0 (96kHz/24-bit) stereo mix, the lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (96kHz/24-bit) “perspective” mix or the more discrete lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (96kHz/24-bit) “stage” mix. My personal preference is the stage mix, which simply mirrors the “perspective” mix in terms of panning, it seems, but broadens the soundstage. For example, In the “perspective” mix, the drums are panned front-right. A switch to the “stage” mix yields the sound of the drums far right, the result of them being placed hard front-right and hard surround-right. The stereo mix is equally natural, but loses, in my opinion, some of the natural ambience that makes these recordings sound so lively.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4.5/5]

Mark Chenutt’s Your Room is another winner from AIX Records. The sound quality here is on par the quality of the music creating the perfect storm of musical entertainment. In keeping with their tradition of providing the best of  cutting edge technology, the 3D music album also provides a fine 3D presentation for all those equipped with such technology, but not to worry, if you’re not 3D capable, this will still work for you. Highly recommended.
