Meet the Robinsons tells the story of Lewis, an orphan who wants nothing more than to be adopted. After 124 tries, Lewis has come to the firm belief that he’s never going to find a family and science is his only chance at a real life. Entering the local science fair, Lewis is confident that his new invention (which allows the participant to view past memories) will be the one ticket he needs. Unfortunately, like many past attempts, Lewis fails. He feels ready to give up. That is until a mysterious boy appears claiming that he’s from the future. He informs Lewis that his invention was rigged to fail by a figure in a “bowler hat.” In order to prove he’s from the future, the boy takes Lewis with him to not only show him how important this invention is but also to show him what the future just may hold. What results is a fun film that really defines the Walt Disney motto of “keep moving forward.”

Having heard many good things about Meet the Robinsons, I went in with high expectations. A few of my close friends labeled the film as a return to the classic days of Disney animation. The days of The Little Mermaid and The Lion King. While Meet the Robinsons isn’t either of those two, I’ll easily admit that this one of Disney’s better efforts in recent years. The film is charming, entertaining and fun. It has a great family message, heck actual a real life message. The idea to never give up, always believe in yourself and never let anyone bring you down. I personally liked the Walt Disney touch throughout, the touch of “keep moving forward.” It almost made me feel like Walt himself was looking down in admiration that a film made by his legendary studio has finally understood his message.

Meet the Robinsons arrives with a 1080p, AVC-MPEG 4 encoded 2D transfer, one that is a wonder (like most animated films) to behold. The film’s color palette features lush, vibrant blues, greens and dark blacks. Detail is excellent regardless whether it’s the brightness of an exterior scene or the darkness of the latter future moments. Contrast levels are accurate while textures, particularly that of Lewis’ clothing, are great. Quite the impressive presentation.

Moving over to the 3D realm, the 3D image is just as equally fine. Depth is spot on. In particular initial moments of the future world really dazzle. Here many objects are simultaneously moving. Bubbles, characters, machines, etc. All varying items that make 3D something truly great to behold. Ghosting is kept to a bare minimum only really occurring in some of the darker moments. It truly seems that animation is the route to go if you want an effective 3D image. Meet the Robinsons clearly has the best 3D image out of all the recent batch of titles I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing.

Audio Quality

Ah, now this was a nice surprise! While the former PCM 5.1 track is still available on the 2D presentation, Disney has upped the ante and thrown a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track as an exclusive on the 3D release. With that said, both mixes are virtually the same. Dialogue is well reproduced via the center channel. LFE is downright excellent offering up deep, immersive bass that I found to be some of the best an animated film has had in some time. Dynamics are great as well. The output of the different machines, beeps and blips. Atmosphere is top notch with the varying background noises I just mentioned. Truly, truly an all around excellent A/V presentation.

Disney has updated one of their best films in recent times with a stunning 3D presentation. Out of all their 3D titles set to street November 8th, 2011, Meet the Robinsons is clearly the best of the bunch.
