Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead tells of a story involving horror fan Russell (Taylor Piedmore). When a rather big horror film convention hits town, Russell drags hit friend Dwayne (Allen Maldonado) to it, even though Dwayne doesn’t see horror films as respectable movies. He’s so against it, that he routinely causes a commotion during a film screening. Taking a break for lunch, the two soon find themselves invited to an after-hours party by Judith (Lauren Mae Shafer). After awhile at the party, the two suddenly wake up to a strange world, one that looks eerily like Night of the Living Dead. Soon the excitement and fun turns into real horror as they finds themselves trapped inside an isolated farmhouse. What’s outside? Why nothing more than a horde of hungry zombies who want some flesh and blood! What results is a mostly entertaining re-imagination of a horror classic.

For the most part, Mimesis works – simply because re-imagination a classic like Night of the Living Dead is almost always a win in my book. While this version isn’t the absolute best, there’s enough positives here to outweigh the negatives. In particular, the physical characters here surprised me. Initially, I had figured that the actors would be mostly mundane, very bland and formulaic in tone and style. Such isn’t the case as most of the characters were genuine and reacted to the sudden horror filled world of zombies, in a manner that  (somewhat) made me think of The Walking Dead. Also, the scares felt real and (at some points) had me actually fearing the zombies (something lacking from most modern horror movies – outside of the recent excellent Mama.) While the film itself isn’t perfect in any sense, Mimesis surprised me with its attention to detail. For that reason alone, I’ll chalk this one as something worth watching for all you horror fans out there.

Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead arrives with a 2:35:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer, one of which serves the film well. Colors tend to lean toward a warmer palette with brighter greens and sky blues. Darks can suffer a bit as some of the film’s clarity can take a hit during the darker sequences. It’s here that detail can be a bit fuzzy; however, this is only during a few moments, so it’s nothing to be overly concerned with. Texture detail is still strong though, particularly that of clothing textures which result in fine fabric detail. Outside of that one issue, I found this transfer to be serviceable.

The film’s included Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track is solid throughout. Even though the dialogue can be a bit mundane at times, it’s well reproduced throughout. Ambience and background discrete effects help to bring home that horror feel and sound. LFE delivers some solid low end, particularly during a few of the film’s heightened horror sequences. All in all, this is an effective sound mix by Anchor Bay.
