Mitsubishi Develops Miniature Blu-ray Drive for Use in Automobiles

logo_mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Electric has developed a new Blu-ray drive 1/3 the size of conventional Blu-ray drives that the company intends for use in automotive high definition entertainment systems.

The new 1DIN (H50mm×W178mm×D180mm) drives are currently the smallest Blu-ray drives in the world and will include a memory buffer to compensate for those less-than-ideal bumpy rides and will be compatible with BD-ROM/BD-R/BD-RE, DVD-ROM/DVD-R/DVD-RW, and CD/CD-DA.

The drives are set to come to market in Japan as part of the automotive entertainment systems in 2010, but there are as yet no announced plans for release outside of the Japanese market.
