Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre (Movie Review)

REVIEW OVERVIEW

The Film

SUMMARY

A special agent named Fortune enlists the help of a movie star to join his elite team of undercover operatives to help thwart the sale of a dangerous weapon.

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

In Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre, Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) leads a team of operatives on a mission to stop some nefarious characters from using a new technology to wreak havoc on the world. His secret weapon? Johnny Francesco (Josh Hartnett). Johnny Francesco is one of the most popular actors in Hollywood but hasn’t really gotten that meaty role he’s been craving for until he’s drafted by Fortune and his crew.

Speaking of crews, Orson Fortune’s teammates include but are not limited to: Tech expert Sarah Fidel (Aubrey Plaza), Weapons expert J.J. (Bugzy Malone), and Bossman Nathan Jasmine (Cary Elwes). With team in tow Orson Fortune will go on a worldwide mission to stop the forces of evil from turning certain designated destinations into sand.

Guy Ritchie is on a role – Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre is his third theatrically released film in the last five years, with The Covenant also releases later in 2023. Ritchie has been a busy beaver indeed. Operation Fortune is a brisk jaunt that is reminiscent of Man from U.N.C.L.E. in terms of color palette and stylistic flourishes. The only exception is that Operation Fortune is rated R.

  • Jason Statham, Bugzy Malone, and Aubrey Plaza in Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre (2023)
  • Hugh Grant and Lourdes Faberes in Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre (2023)
  • Aubrey Plaza and Josh Hartnett in Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre (2023)
  • Aubrey Plaza in Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre (2023)
  • Cary Elwes in Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre (2023)

The quirky cast of characters all hit their marks, with Aubrey Plaza stealing every scene she is in, along with Hugh Grant being deliciously cheeky in every scene he’s in. It was also great to see Cary Elwes as the team’s handler and boss.

With all that being said, the road to get Operation Fortune in theaters has not been an easy road due to STX Films going bankrupt. The film was picked up at the last minute by Lionsgate for wide release. Unfortunately, it’s a very crowded market right now and I was not able to catch the film in Dolby Cinema or IMAX. I saw the film at a very small AMC theater and there was probably ten people there. That is a shame since the film is highly recommended and I would suggest trying to catch it in theaters before it hits home video. I am looking forward to the eventual 4K disc release.

I think Guy Ritchie has done it again and am looking forward to The Covenant later this year. Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre is highly recommended!
