The Sandlot tells the story of a group of young kids during the summer of 1962 who end up bonding over the sport of baseball. When Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) moves to a new town with his mother (Karen Allen) and stepfather (Denis Leary), he decides one day to follow a small group of kids to a baseball field known as ‘the sandlot’. When a fly ball is hit to him, Scotty is laughed off the field because he can’t even throw the ball back. Partially because he once wasn’t that good a player, but now is the best in the neighborhood, Benny Rodriguez (Mike Vitar) befriends Scotty aiming to show him the ropes of the game. What results is, in this reviewers humble opinion, one of the best baseball films ever (outside of Field of Dreams.)

Sandlot_2

Ah, The Sandlot, a pure staple of my childhood. As I sit here and type this up, I can’t even begin to tell you HOW many times I’ve seen this film. TV, VHS, DVD, and now Blu-ray, the film has never lost its charm, or any of its humor, style or wit in its 20th year of release. Yes, some of the film’s critics may point out the numerous sport film clichés here, however, like all the other feel good movies out there,  I’ll never get enough of The Sandlot – no matter how many times I watch it. Oh, and if you haven’t seen this one yet (for whatever reason), do so immediately. You won’t be disappointed.

The Sandlot hits the field with a 2:35:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer. Despite this being a 20th Anniversary edition, Fox has decided to use the same transfer found on the initial Blu-ray release in 2011 (nothing wrong with that, as that transfer was solid.) The film’s color palette captures the summer themes well, with the bright yellows of the sun and the gold browns of the baseball field dirt. Clarity is impressive, as are facial close ups. Contrast levels remain accurate, and overall detail is vastly improved over the DVD counterpart included in this release. All in all, this is a good effort from Fox.

This Blu-ray Disc includes a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, one of which captures the fun summer themes well. Dialogue is intelligible throughout via the center channel. Atmosphere, especially during the baseball games as well as during a few of the music moments (TEQUILA!), is fine too. LFE is a bit reserved for the most part, but does show up during the final chase sequence. While this track won’t hit at ‘Best Of’ lists, fans of the film will be pleased with the effort Fox has put forth.

With a solid technical presentation, 20th Century Fox’s classic sports film The Sandlot, comes highly recommended. Simply put, if you haven’t seen The Sandlot yet, do so immediately.
