The Film

[Rating:2/5]

Of all the forgettable films from the 80s to release on Blu-ray, I couldn’t quite understand why MGM would choose to bring Teen Wolf out of the vaults. I realized, then, that they were taking advantage of the new MTV series Teen Wolf that was coming to television. Of course, that new series is more like Twilight meets The Vampire Diaries than this offbeat teen comedy from the 80’s, but, hey, everybody has to make a buck, right?

In Teen Wolf the movie, Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future), plays Scott, a high school teen who’s on a losing basketball team and pretty much one of his school’s losers. Only now, besides all the usual teen problems like trouble from the cool kids, a terrible time trying to get girls and all the usual puberty issues, Scott discovers he is a werewolf and it runs in the family – his dad’s one too. After turning during a basketball game, instead of freaking out, everybody heralds Scott’s new superhuman abilities. He becomes the star of his team, they start winning all their games, all the girls love him, and he’s the most popular guy in school. All of this seems like a dream, but is it really what he wants?

This bit of 1980s comedy will take you back to a time when Michael J. Fox was still in his Family Ties days, young, spritely, and free from his debilitating disease, but other than nostalgia, Teen Wolf is utterly forgettable fluff that isn’t even all that funny.

At this point it’s beginning to look like MGM is just dumping their back catalogue onto Blu-ray as quickly as possible, as inexpensively as possible. This transfer of Teen Wolf looks like it hardly saw any restoration effort. There is a lot of source damage like scratches and dust straight through the movie. The darker areas of the film often descend into a bit of harshness and video noise, and detail is just soft overall. Having seen many catalogue releases both older and younger than this come to Blu-ray looking much better than this, I know that more could have been done to freshen up this AVC transfer.

The soundtrack for Teen Wolf hasn’t been rejuvenated much either. A DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono soundtrack is offered and there’s not much to say about it other than it sounds a bit boxy and the dialogue sometimes falls a bit too low. There is also some audible crackle than can be heard here and there.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1/5]

It seems the minimal amount of effort put into to bringing this title to Blu-ray extends to the supplements as well, where only a sneak peek and theatrical trailer are offered.:

  • Sneak Peek – Teen Wolf – The TV Series (1.78:1; 1080p/24; 0:02.42)
  • Theatrical Trailer (1.85:1; 1080p/24)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:2/5]

Teen Wolf is a silly 1985 comedy brought to Blu-ray with the least amount of effort by MGM. I say skip unless you lived through this era and are feeling particularly nostalgic, then rent it in a fit of desperation.
