The Series

[Rating:5/5]

The second season of this hilariously unique, intelligent sitcom about four nerdy geniuses and their not so high-IQ, but street smart and beautiful neighbor gets even better in this second season. The characters’ unique idiosyncrasies are all brought to the fore, particularly the obsessive compulsiveness of Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and the dichotomy that is the mostly shy Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) who can only speak to women when he gets drunk. The researchers’ world is allowed to expand as we finally get to see the comic book store and other characters are introduced who will become recurring characters for the run of the series, including comic book store owner Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and the scientist with a speech impediment, Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Of course, the will they/won’t they relationship between Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) continues as the insane and ever growing references to pop culture including comic book characters, vintage video games, fantasy and science fiction continue.

Video Quality

[Rating:4.5/5]

The 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer of The Big Bang Theory‘s 35mm source is a vast improvement over any and all broadcast versions in this Blu-ray release having sharper detail, lower noise levels, no macroblocking, and more stable whites. This second season also seems to be a bit cleaner than the companion release of the first season to Blu-ray.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Second Season comes with a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/16-bit) soundtrack that, just like all the previous seasons that were released to Blu-ray, really doesn’t do much with all those extra channels. While it does offer good clean dialogue and a nice sense of separation across the front and surround channels whenever the laugh track kicks in, there isn’t much else going on in the way of ambience or low frequencies.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:2/5]

The supplements on disc are rather slim and are in SD, but the set does come with DVDs and UltraViolet included as well.

The supplements:

  • The Big Bang Theory: Physicist to the Stars (1.78:1; SD; 00:10:12) – Real-Life Physicist/UCLA Professor David Saltzberg’s consultation for the series.
  • Testing the Infinite Hilarity Hypothesis in Relation to The Big Bang Theory (1.78:1; SD; 00:15:33) – A brief “making of” type featurette includes interviews with cast and crew.
  • Gag Reel (1.78:1; SD; 00:08:54)
  • DVDs
  • UltraViolet Digital Copy

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:4/5]

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Second Season is pure laugh-a-minute genius. Sitting through this entire set in one sitting is painful – in a good way. You can’t stop laughing and you can lose track of all the references to geeky cool. Highly recommended.
