SUMMARY

Banshee Squad Members join the Hong Kong Police Academy to undergo training supervised by Madam Wu (Sibelle Hu). They don't get along until they must save their commanding officer from a threat.

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

The Inspector Wears Skirts 2, the follow-up to the successful slapstick action film out of Hong Kong, has Wellson Chin returning to direct the less-than-serious caper. The all-female commando squad SKIRTS is back, and now the veterans of the squad are joined by a group of newcomers (legendary Amy Yip, Angile Leung, and May Lo). They are none too pleased, and at once begin to haze them, which leads to rivalry amongst the group. Some of the set pieces include a food fight in the mess hall and the veterans lighting feces on fire near the rookies’ beds. They must all come together to help save their commanding officer when she is taken hostage by a group of foreign mercenaries.

Chin throws everything into this film with no rhyme or reason and the comedy does not always hit, because it all feels so forced. The good parts are the action sequences again delivered by the Jackie Chan stunt team, who also co-star in the film, but given the overwhelming slapstick and unserious vibe of the film, they almost feel shoehorned into the picture. Shaw Brothers icon Wai Yin-hung (My Young Auntie) and Sibelle Hu (Fong Sai Yuk) also star.

The Video

The Inspector Wears Skirts 2 is taken from a brand new 2K restoration from the original camera negatives and is presented on Blu-ray from 88 Films in a 1.85:1 AVC 1080p encodement. The 1989 film looks a little rough, but presents well, with a thin layer of grain that is mostly consistent. Some areas show a little smearing as if there was some heavier DNR necessary due to the source, because mostly there is a textured layer of grain with good detail. Color shows excellent vibrancy, especially the primaries like reds and blues, so the bright lipsticks, the evening gowns on the women, and more really standout. Shadows are a little on the noisier side, but still decent, perhaps a little flat.

The Audio

The Inspector Wears Skirts 2 has its original Cantonese mono mix in LPCM 2.0 and the English dub in LPCM 2.0 mono. The sound is not fantastic for either one of these tracks, sounding just a little muffled and showing a little bit of clipping in the sound effects, but it does have a good thump in the lows for the kicks, punches, and gunshots.

The Final Assessment

This sequel misses the mark with its screenplay and lame gags, but the action sequences still deliver entertainment value. The transfer has the film looking better than it ever has.
