This Week’s Definitive Blu-ray Releases (Tuesday, December 8, 2009)

It’s a big week for Blu-ray releases as a number of high-profile titles hit store shelves including Half-Blood prince, Public Enemies, and a slew of great concert videos!

Probably one of the most anticipated releases this week is the latest installment of J.K. Rawling’s phenomenon, Harry Potter, with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in a three-disc Blu-ray/DVD + digital copy release from Warner. Additionally Warner has released the Harry Potter Years 1- 6 Gift Set , Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Ultimate Edition), and the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Ultimate Edition).

Johnny Depp appears as the infamous John Dillinger in Michael Mann’s crime drama Public Enemies, also starring French actress Marion Cotillard, who made a name for herself in the wonderful biopic about Edith Piaf, La Vie en Rose.

This is next one is my personal favorite this week, as I’ve been following this series from the very first episode and it was the first series I watched from day one in high definition: Lost: The Compete Fifth Season. The show that started a television phenomenon is now preparing to enter its sixth and final season in 2010 and now is your chance to see its latest season in the splendor of 1080p (it airs on ABC in the US in 720p). Lost: The Compete Fifth Season on Blu-ray is also available in a Dharma Initiative Orientation Kit version chock full of extras.

Julie & Julia is based on the book by Julie Powell and it also arrives this week on Blu-ray. Starring Meryl Streep and and Amy Adams and it should be a real treat for foodies.

From Magnolia Home Entertainment comes this dark comedy starring Robin Williams, written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, World’s Greatest Dad. Despite its name, this is no feelgood, silly, brainless comedy. It’s a film for adults and it is quality stuff.

It’s a big week for music lovers as well, as George Michael: Live in London, Rush: R30 30th Anniversary World Tour, and Pink: Funhouse Tour — Live in Australia and AC/DC: No Bull concert videos on Blu-ray are all released today.
