The Film

[Rating:0.5/5]

Tyler Perry is back with another Madea film, this time Madea’s Witness Protection. In this go around, we find Madea giving up her home after a mafia Ponzi scheme goes wrong. With her home turned into a safe house, she soon discovers that the family she’s protecting actually have more problems than the mob themselves! Now it’s up to Madea to go undercover and over the top as a wealthy socialite in New York, all in hopes of getting the money back. What results is yet another Tyler Perry film devoid of any real substance, any laughs and really any quality.

I sit here trying to think how movies of this nature keep on getting made. Then I realize the age old statement ‘if audiences keep buying, then studios will keep churning them out.’ Akin to that of the modern low-budget splatter fest horror films, Tyler Perry is able to keep making these movies because the cost is relatively low, and his built in fan base keeps on paying to see them – despite the humor being devoid of any substance. The jokes are on the most basic humor level, the laughs feel forced, while the actors all display the ‘I did this for a paycheck’ demeanor. I have zero issues with people making money, and I will give kudos to Perry for (apparently) finding his niche in Hollywood. Just, I’m not a fan of brainless humor. Oddly enough I want quality and genuine humor instead of bland comedy. Call me odd – I guess.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Madea’s Witness Protection arrives with a 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer, which offers a strong presentation. The film’s color palette accurately captures the Atlanta locale, with all of it warm hues and saturated colors. Detail is spot on, particularly that of facial close-ups, which show off accurate flesh tones/contrast levels. All in all, this is an adequately fine transfer from the folks at Lionsgate.

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Featuring an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, I found this lossless offering to be a notch below the aforementioned video. Dialogue, as mundane and boring as it is, is well reproduced via the center channel. Most of the film’s atmosphere comes courtesy of the varying musical sequences used throughout. The mix of current music with the score by Danny Elfman does offer up solid 360-degree sounds. Outside of this, the track itself (like most comedies) tends to lean toward the front of the soundfield. All in all, this track handles the film well.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1/5]

The included supplements are featured in High Definition:

  • Tyler Perry: Multi Hats & Costumes – This one runs 5:57 and serves as a kind of tribute (for some reason) to Tyler Perry.
  • Thank Yur, Hellur: Impersonating Madea – This runs 3:15 and has varying cast members sharing their thoughts on Perry.
  • The Needlemans – Running 4:57, this is dedicated to a certain ‘other’ family featured in the film.
  • Madea’s Fun House – 3:57 worth of gag reels.
  • Madea’s Comedy Icons – At 6:13, this one shows us all the celebs featured.
  • Digital Copy – An UltraViolet Digital Copy is included.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3/5]

Even though his fans won’t need to read this review to know whether or not this film is worth buying, I’ll strongly suggest to all those on the fence about this movie, completely skip this one on all fronts.
