The Film

[Rating:3/5]

Valentine’s Day is Gary Marshall’s sugary-sweet romantic comedy set on the eponymous holiday. It follows several characters, couples new and old and single folks searching for love as their lives intertwine on that eventful day.

Valentine’s Day’s strongest attribute is its all-star cast that includes Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Queen Latifah, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Fox, and Julia Roberts. With so many strong actors doing a top-notch job with such light fare, it’s easy to overlook the deficiencies and clichés in Valentine’s Day.

The main story revolves around the flower shop owner Reed (Ashton Kutcher), recently dumped by his fiancé (Jessica Alba) and his best pal Julia (Jennifer Garner) as they slowly realize through their failed relationships (Julia’s boyfriend (Patrick Dempsey) turns out to be married) that they’re really in love with each other. Queue the violins and harps.

There are so many cute twists and subplots in Valentine’s Day, that some of the stories seem a bit rushed and underdeveloped, such as Jamie Foxx as the sports reporter sent out on the street to cover stories about love and his budding romance with publicity agent Kara (Jessica Biel) or the three week romance between a mailroom guy (Topher Grace) and a receptionist moonlighting as an “adult phone entertainer” (Anne Hathaway).

In the end, Valentine’s Day may not be the greatest film ever made, and it’s certainly not the greatest romantic comedy around, but it does deliver on its promise to provide a toothache-inducing dose of romance. It’ll make a perfect date movie, and then some.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Color reproduction in Valentine’s Day’s 1.78:1 1080p VC-1 encoding is splendid. The overload of pinks and rosy red hues explode from the screen while flesh tones are spot on. There is a thin veneer of grain that varies in intensity, but the overlook is film-like and detailed.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Audio in the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack is on the typically boring side for a film of this sort, but it is well done nonetheless. Dialogue is clean and intelligible and the surrounds carry a good bit of atmospheric information. The scenes during Kara’s “I Hate Valentine’s Day” party in the Indian restaurant offer up a great opportunity for the subwoofer to flex its muscles a bit with some extended low frequencies with some lively music.
