The Film

[Rating:1/5]

Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, as the title indicates, is a prequel…of sorts. The year is 1974 and our brothers Sawtooth, One Eye and Three-Finger have just been thrown inside of a mental asylum for good reasons. Clearly earning their names via heinous acts, the three soon escape letting out other members of the prison. We soon flash forward to 2003 where we meet a bunch of random people, many of which won’t mean anything to us. Naturally you have your dumb characters, both male and female, who are seemingly present just to let out a few screams in order to ‘heighten’ the horror. No, but seriously the group of friends decide to go wander through the wilderness where one, yes,  (like the Family Guy joke) actually (yes, I’m NOT joking) says the name of the film (“Ah, he said it..he said it!”). An assortment of other acts occur, obviously with the group of teens running into our three friends…all of whom would love to feast on some young flesh. What results is a truly horrible, boring, forgettable film.

Wrong Turn 4 is the kind of bad film that you sit entirely through (all because you don’t give up on any film), but now just wished you had shut it off after 20-minutes. This film is just so preposterously bad it’s not even funny. There aren’t any real, true scares, the blood splatters endlessly, the screams are fake and the entire film is just one big cliché ripping off countless horror genre bits used numerous times over. If you really must sit through this because you’re curious (for some reason) or better yet like me and you’ve seen the others, avoid making the same mistake I did. There are better horror films out there like Fright Night.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The 1:78:1 framed, AVC/MPEG-4 encoded transfer is just about as good as I had hoped. While the film may have all the cliches of every bad horror film ever made, the film’s transfer seems to hit all the right notes. The film’s color palette uses colors like reds and blues that all but help to bring out detail. The film’s detail is rock solid throughout, in particular character closeups. It’s here that flesh tones/contrast levels are accurate. There are a few moments where colors can look a bit murky and washed out, but I suppose this may have been a stylistic choice by the film’s director. Darker moments do hold the best detail out of any sequences, especially the exterior moments. Minus the aforementioned style issue, I found this transfer to be quite good.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

The film’s provided DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is equally as good as the aforementioned video. Dialogue, front-heavy as it is, is well reproduced never dropping out. Dynamics and discrete effects do occasionally appear, thanks in part in your snowmobiles, background screams and the what not. While some of the effects do feel rather forceful at times, I still found the DTS mix to be effective.

Supplemental Materials

[Rating:1.5/5]

The included features are shown in a mix of HD and SD:

  • Director’s Die-ary’s – This runs 7:37 and shows the diaries Director Declan O’Brien kept on a daily basis.
  • Making Another Wrong Turn – Running 12:36, this is your making-of feature that shows behind-the-scenes, production and cast interviews.
  • Lifestyles of the Sick and Infamous – At 5:13, this brief feature deals with the production design and filming inside of a real mental hospital.
  • Wrong Turn 4 Music Video – This track is by The Blackout City Kids and runs 3:24.
  • Deleted Scenes (SD) – 18:14 of deleted scenes are shown, X in total.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:2/5]

Wrong Turn 4 fails on every end of the horror cycle. While Fox has put together a solid V/A presentation, the film is so horrendous that I can’t even began to say ‘Rent’ this.
